The Department of Biology at Carleton University invites applications from qualified candidates for a tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2023. Qualified applicants are expected to have an exceptional record of research accomplishment within the discipline of Molecular Microbiology. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a sustained externally funded research program. Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics and related fields. Successful candidates will be expected to develop graduate and undergraduate courses in their area of specialization.


About the Academic Unit

The Department of Biology is a teaching and research unit with close connections to a variety of other units including the Institute of Biochemistry. The Department is also part of the broader Ottawa- Carleton Institute of Biology that links scholars at Carleton and the University of Ottawa. The curriculum in the Department of Biology is innovative and involves many opportunities for students to participate in understanding and solving real-world problems through research experiences.

Our faculty have access to a broad range of resources including a greenhouse, cell culture facilities, animal care facility, microscopy facilities, mass spectroscopy, modern CL2 certified research labs and well-equipped teaching laboratories. Many faculty members within the Department have close research collaborations with government agencies, hospital research institutes, industries and other organizations within the National Capital Region and around the world.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D., postdoctoral experience, demonstrated research excellence and a commitment to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate-level students. The successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in microbiology. The incumbent will mentor undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral fellows. Individuals using molecular biology, genetics, genomics and/or systems biology approaches are encouraged to apply. Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department of Biology and other Departments across Campus, as well as with allied agencies, will be given preference.
