Applications are invited for a permanent full-time tenure track position at the level of Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at Carleton University.

We are interested in candidates with expertise in conservation science focused on issues such as the biodiversity crisis and climate change.  Applicants must be able to teach core undergraduate courses in the Biology program in the realm of conservation science and interact with scholars and learners in other relevant units such as Environmental Science and Geography.  This position will augment existing teaching and research strengths within the Department of Biology, and provide research leadership consistent with evidence-based approaches to conservation decisions, policy, and practice.  There will also be opportunity to work directly with members of the National Wildlife Research Centre of Environment and Climate Change Canada which is located on campus.

The Department of Biology is a teaching and research unit with close connections to a variety of other units including the Institute of Environmental and Interdisciplinary Science and the Department of Geography and Environmental Studies.  Moreover, the Department of Biology is part of the broader Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Biology that links scholars at Carleton and the University of Ottawa.  The curriculum in the Department of Biology is innovative and involves many opportunities for students to participate in understanding and solving real-world problems through field courses and research experiences. This is part of a multi-year cluster hire in conservation and sustainability emphasizing our commitment to growth in this realm.

The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. and demonstrated excellence and commitment to teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate-level students. In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to develop an externally funded research program in conservation science. Research topics of interest include but are not limited to population ecology, landscape ecology, invasive species, ecosystem restoration, nature-based solutions, conservation decisions, environmental evidence, community-based conservation and Indigenous partnerships for conservation. We are most interested in candidates who have adopted a solutions-oriented approach too conservation.  Applicants with the ability to forge collaborations with members of the Department of Biology and relevant faculty across the university, as well as with allied agencies and institutions, will be given preference.  Successful candidates will have an established track record of engaging with diverse partners and delivering science that informs environmental policy and practice.
