Department of Materials Engineering

Assistant Professor (Advanced Manufacturing)

The Department of Materials Engineering at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver campus) seeks qualified applicants for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to build on our strengths in the field of advanced manufacturing (in exceptional cases a tenure-track, or tenured, appointment at the rank of Associate Professor may be considered). The anticipated start date of the position is September 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Over its long history, the Department of Materials Engineering at UBC has distinguished itself with excellence in research, teaching and service in the field of Materials Engineering. The Department has a strong record of collaborative work within UBC and industry and promotes interdisciplinary research. The Department has recently partnered with the Department of Mechanical Engineering (UBC Vancouver) and the School of Engineering at UBC’s Okanagan campus to create a new, undergraduate program in Manufacturing Engineering. We are seeking dynamic, emerging leaders in the field of manufacturing whose focus for teaching and research is in one of: i) high value sustainable manufacturing, ii) the use of data science in manufacturing, iii) biomedical / biomaterials manufacturing, and / or iv) other relevant manufacturing areas. Building on our strengths, we aim to lead the development of innovative processes and technologies that will transform the current manufacturing landscape with an emphasis on the interaction between the process and the material’s performance in the final part/component. For all research areas, there is an interest in both computational and experimental approaches with an emphasis on integration, validation and implementation of solutions to solve challenges in manufacturing.

Applicants for this position should have a demonstrated track record of (or possess clear potential to excel in) research and teaching. The successful candidate must develop an independent, internationally recognized research program, and seek funding, both as an individual and in collaboration with others, drawing on Government and industrial sources. The position will involve teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the supervision of graduate students at the Masters and Doctoral levels and providing service to the University and the broader community.

A Ph.D. degree in Materials Engineering or a closely related field is required, and the successful candidate will be expected to register as a member of Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia. Further information on the Department is available at www.mtrl.ubc.ca and information on the Faculty of Applied Science is available at https://apsc.ubc.ca/faculty.

Applications must be submitted online at https://ubc.wd10.myworkdayjobs.com/ubcfacultyjobs . Applicants should submit a letter stating their suitability for the position and include:

1) a current curriculum vitae a 1-page statement of research interests*

2) a 1-page statement of teaching philosophy and interests*

3) a 1-page statement on how their research and/or teaching would contribute to an equitable, diverse and inclusive (EDI) academic environment*

4) Names and contact information (including email addresses) of four referees

* Additional pages will be removed

The initial closing date for applications is June 1st, 2024 but applications will be accepted until a suitable candidate is found.
