The Marketing & Communications team at the University of Toronto Scarborough is looking for a dynamic, innovative communicator to join us. Our team is a highly collaborative group of Marketing Communications professionals, driven to find new and creative ways to reach our audiences. We bring the U of T story to life, every day. Under the general direction of the Executive Director, Marketing & Communications for the University of Toronto Scarborough, the Assistant Director, Marketing & Communications works collegially and collaboratively with a diverse range of staff, faculty members and stakeholders, providing guidance on internal and external-facing communications and marketing materials and strategies to elevate UTSC’s profile and advance results-driven campaigns. The incumbent will have a strong understanding of the logistical work that underpins strategic execution, and be able to communicate complex technical projects to a wider audience.


As a leader and a mentor on the Marketing & Communications team, the Assistant Director manages a team of high-caliber professionals and oversees execution and measurement of UTSC’s marketing communications strategy, ensuring integration across academic and administrative units. In addition, the incumbent is responsible for providing strategic advice and direction to academic and administrative units across UTSC via leadership of the campus-wide Communicators Community of Practice. The Assistant Director works closely with Advisors and their units to ensure alignment, consistency, and efficient use of resources.


The Assistant Director oversees a large portfolio of UTSC marketing and communication executive initiatives, including multi-platform campaigns; actively participates in senior-level decision-making and is responsible for liaising and working closely with the Executive Director, as well as UTSC and University leadership as needed, to ensure appropriate consultation, measurement and quarterly reporting on communications plans. The Assistant Director facilitates the design of marketing and communications strategies that are comprehensive, innovative and sensitive to the needs of diverse local, regional and international target audiences, and ensures continual incorporation of current best practices.  As a leader and a mentor on the Marketing & Communications team, the Assistant Director manages a staff of high-caliber creative professionals and assumes responsibility for human resources, labour relations and financial management, dispute resolution and compliance of collective agreements.

Essential Qualifications:


EDUCATION: University degree in journalism, marketing, communications or related field or equivalent combination ofeducation and experience. Graduate degree an asset.

EXPERIENCE: A minimum of six years’ experience in communication and marketing management with extensiveexperience developing communications strategies, often on complex topics, on behalf of a publicly visibleorganization. Strong record of collaborations and partnerships. Demonstrated experience in projectmanagement. Experience creating and executing integrated marketing communications strategies.Experience working in a highly complex organization and willingness to work across units and departments.Demonstrated experience in leading and managing a team, preferably in a unionized environment.

SKILLS: Outstanding writing and editing skills; excellent oral and presentation skills. Ability to deal professionallywith tension and conflicts. Outstanding communications judgment. Expert in-depth knowledge of currentcommunications best practices and trends. Able to work in a highly diverse community with staff from variedbackgrounds. Excellent project management skills, creative management skills and problem-solving skillsrequired. Strong knowledge of communications measurement and content trends, especially as related todiverse audiences. Demonstrated experience with digital measurement and associated analytics andreporting tools. Ability to make strategic marketing communications decisions on behalf of the campus andits leadership. Demonstrated creativity and ability to think strategically. Detail oriented to ensure accurateand reliable implementation of communication strategies. Proficiency in digital-first office andcommunications approaches. Understanding of social media and emerging digital platforms.
