The Assistant Dean, Recruitment and Admissions provides overall leadership to the UBC Sauder School of Business related to undergraduate and graduate recruitment and admissions. Develops strategies related to enrolment targets and identifies opportunities to achieve consistency practices in recruitment efforts. This role provides high-level oversight to all marketing, recruitment, and admissions activities as well as oversight of the operational functions within UBC Sauder. The Assistant Dean develops strategic partnerships with UBC central units, other UBC faculties, business partners, and vendors and is highly visible to the external community.


Organizational Status

Reports to the Senior Associate Dean, Research at a strategic level.

Provides strategic leadership and direction to the full recruitment and admissions team to maximize relationships, ensure consistency of effort and overall effectiveness of all teams in fulfilling the UBC Sauder mandate.

Cultivates collaborative working relationships with senior members of other UBC Sauder units and the UBC community whose activities focus on efforts to effectively support the University’s international undergraduate and graduate enrolment targets.


Work Performed

  • Develops and leads the implementation of short- and long-term recruitment strategies for UBC Sauder to foster a significant increase in both the number and calibre of applications for undergraduate and professional graduate programs. Defines new business markets, engages with key partners (e.g., International Student Initiative (ISI) at UBC, various recruiting agents, affiliated business schools (i.e., Global Network of Advanced Management (GNAM)) and plans the overall recruitment targets for the school.

  • Develops vision and strategy for new and innovative recruitment plans (such as new markets and demographics), and proactively leads the identification of key markets, student populations, and under-utilized areas both domestically and internationally.

  • Navigates a complex business and educational enterprise and is responsible for identifying and evaluating local, national and international opportunities, and developing and implementing strategic business expansion initiatives accordingly for recruitment.

  • Explores and collaboratively develops highly innovative approaches and partnerships with other faculties, business partners, and recruitment agencies and is highly visible to the external community. Creates new opportunities with UBC ISI, UBC Admissions, and other UBC Faculties to increase applications for the undergraduate and professional graduate certificates, diplomas, and degrees. Oversees recruitment for multiple programs at UBC Sauder as well as Summer Programs.

  • Manages the development of the marketing strategies for undergraduate and professional graduate certificates, diplomas, and degrees, including launching new programs to market as needed. Works collaboratively with program offices to analyze market demand and develop new programs.

  • Provides organizational oversight for all marketing, recruitment and admission activities, fostering consistency of effort across teams, setting standards for equity, quality and effectiveness. Creates plans for the recruitment team to identify and remove redundancies, including a framework for team workloads and goals.

  • Responsible for identifying and developing business relationships and partnerships with key regulatory organizations, professional associations, industry employer groups and post-secondary institutions. Leads the development of enhanced relationships with post-secondary and other universities to attract a pool of applicants for the various programs offered at UBC Sauder.

  • Develops goals related to recruitment, admissions, strategic enrolment management, applicant experience and services, and internationalization for undergraduate and professional graduate programs. Advises and collaborates with UBC Sauder leadership (specifically the Assistant Deans of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School, Undergraduate Office and the Business Career Centre) and other management peers with relevant data, observations and recommendations.

  • Travels to represent UBC Sauder to a variety of audiences in local, national and international arenas, working with prominent companies, government agencies, industry associations, educational institutions and relevant individuals.

  • Provides strategic oversight of the admissions process for all graduate degree programs, independent of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (FGPS). Ensures alignment with UBC FGPS standards and policies. Works closely with and ensures alignment with UBC Undergraduate Admissions for undergraduate programs. Makes data-informed decisions, analyzing data on international applications, eligibilities, yields and melt. Reviews, analyzes and develops competitive scholarship programs. Works with external agencies and relevant UBC units to ensure competitive, efficient, and appropriate external loan programs are available to students.

  • Responsible for determining and providing strategic direction on systems, programs and services to support the recruitment, enrolment, and onboarding of undergraduate and professional graduate students.

  • Develops and executes on strategic action plans to maximize UBC’s position in the relevant global rankings to build the business school’s international prominence and promote UBC Sauder as a top-tier research global business school.

  • Leads the recruitment team in implementing the marketing strategy to maintain established programs, grow new undergraduate and professional graduate offerings, and expand student connections globally.

  • Works closely with the UBC Sauder Dean’s Office to set annual objectives for undergraduate and graduate enrolment targets, and proposes, manages and monitors the corresponding annual working budget.

  • Aligning with the goals of UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan and the goals of UBC Sauder’s Indigenous Business Centre, works collaboratively with partners and stakeholders to grow Indigenous student enrolments.

  • Performs other duties aligned with the classification level.


Consequence of Error/Judgement

Works within broad mandates. Work is reviewed in terms of fulfillment of mandates and achievement of executive goals. The Assistant Dean provides direction to the unit to achieve overall program goals, balance short-term demands with complex policy priorities and long-term program and school objectives. The Assistant Dean manages relationships within a multi-cultural and ethnically diverse student body. This position has the complex task of coordinating and balancing the distinct objectives of various constituents, often with conflicting interests. Decisions must be in line with school goals and integrated with the vision and direction of the university for all recruitment related activities.

Decisions impact the quality of academic programs and influence the effectiveness of student management. Poor decisions will have a long-term negative effect on the marketability of the programs and adversely impact the reputation, revenue and financial viability of the UBC Sauder School of Business and the University of British Columbia. Errors in judgement and failure to meet student expectations may negatively impact the overall image of the school as an institution for superior management education and/or loss of exceptional students to competitor schools. Failure to provide sound decisions could result in a loss of confidence of the school and undermine the Dean's efforts to raise the school's global ranking and reputation to ensure sustained access to resources and success of the school in the long run.


Supervision Received
Works under the overall direction of the Senior Associate Dean, Research in line with the school’s strategic plans. Under broad direction, works independently, utilizing concepts and exercising considerable independent judgment and initiative in the creation and implementation of strategies and initiatives, and in addressing complex matters. Keeps the Senior Associate Dean, Research informed of actions through reports and discussions. Strategies, initiatives and projects are independently managed and may be subject to final review only. Unusual items would be brought to the attention of the Senior Associate Dean, Research at an early stage.
Supervision Given
Manages the recruitment and admission team and various student employees.
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s Degree and extensive experience in Business Development and recruitment. Minimum of twelve years of related experience, or the equivalent combination of education and experience, and a demonstrated ability to establish a vision and plan strategically in a complex competitive environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Depth of experience in undergraduate and/or graduate domestic and international student recruitment and student experience at a university similar to UBC. Includes experience working with secondary school students, their counsellors and families; extensive knowledge of international secondary educational systems and international curricula; and working with and understanding the goals and challenges of undergraduate and professional graduate students.

  • Experience living or working internationally, with an understanding of the opportunities and challenges working within the field of international education in the increasingly competitive international arena; proven ability to work effectively across cultures.

  • Ability to respond positively to change and to think clearly and exercise sound judgement in managing unexpected situations that may arise for traveling staff or for personnel stationed overseas.

  • Ability to take initiative, resourceful in problem solving, and able to maintain focus amidst competing and changing priorities.

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and motivate senior staff.

  • Proven human resource management skills, clear leadership vision.

  • Ability to exercise diplomacy and discretion and to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including students, faculty, staff, and senior university administrators, as well as with members of international organizations, Universities and other schools.

  • Superior oral communication skills, and ability to give presentations of persuasive nature; experience developing and delivering education and training would be a definite asset.

  • Superior written communication skills, experience analyzing data, report and proposal writing.

  • Proven ability to carry out strategic planning, with strong organizational ability and the level of attention to detail needed to effectively implement strategies.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate and interact with empathy, understanding and respect of diverse and divergent perspectives and behaviours.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to navigate difficult and complex conversations with students, faculty, and staff.
