Job Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Head Coach, Men s Volleyball assists with the coaching, management and coordination of the men s volleyball program. The objectives are to provide opportunities for athletically talented volleyball players and develop them to their fullest potential as student-athletes. This position is responsible for operating under USPORTS operating bylaws, University policies, and philosophy and objectives of the Varsity Program and Athletic Department.

Organizational Status
Athletics & Recreation (A&R) is a department within the VP Students portfolio, with a strong focus on creating an exceptional UBC student experience. The A&R Department has a team of approximately 125 employees, and is led by a strong cross-unit management team. It services over 20,000 students through recreational programming, 26 varsity teams, and 13 competitive clubs along with thousands of members of the UBC community.
Reports directly to the Head Coach, Men s Volleyball on a daily basis and is ultimately responsible to the Director of Athletics, Performance and Team Support.
Work Performed
Assists Head Coach, Men s Volleyball in the coaching, management and coordination of the men s varsity volleyball program.
In coordination with Head Coach, responsible for the recruitment of highly skilled student-athletes.
In conjunction with the Head Coach, responsible for orienting student-athletes to the policies and regulations of the University, Department of Athletics & Recreation, Canada West and USPORTS.
Works with the Director, Development and Alumni Engagement (DAE) in support of alumni relations and team fundraising initiatives.
Works with Student Athlete Services unit to ensure participating student-athletes meet all necessary and required eligibility regulations as set out in the Canada West and U Sport rules and regulations
Performs duties in conjunction with the Varsity administration units as it relates to team travel, student-athlete financial awards, housing and eligibility requirements, as directed by Head Coach.
Works with the Senior Manager, Sports Medicine and Sport Science in delivery of related programs for the Varsity team as directed by the Head Coach.
Liaise with the Integrated Support team (S&C, Nutrition, Analytics, Physio)
Encourages student-athletes to maintain and develop good academic standing and monitors and assists student-athletes with academic progress.
Cooperates with Senior Manager, Communications and Media Relations and the Manager, Sports Information in conducting interviews and athlete information for media guides and website.
Working with the Director of DAE, Athletics and Recreation, supports fund-raising efforts and initiatives such as Big Block and Thunderbird Scholarship Breakfast.
Participation in provincial and national programs and community events is encouraged to enhance coaching ability and the overall program.
Know and abide by USPORTS and Canada West rules, regulations and ethical guidelines.
Responsible for the summer volleyball camp program.
Other duties may be substituted as required.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
This position represents the UBC Men s Volleyball Program, the students and the University. Incorrect decisions / judgment will directly affect the Department and UBC s reputation within the community at large. The men s volleyball program must be managed with the utmost of integrity so as to positively impact not only the University but also the alumni who are associated with the men s volleyball program.
Supervision Received
Reports to the Head Coach, Men s Volleyball on a daily basis and is ultimately responsible to the Managing Director, Athletics and Recreation.

Student-athletes, student manager.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor s degree required.
Minimum Coaching Certification: Certified NCCP Level II is preferred, or equivalent.- Knowledge of the academic system at the University.
Knowledge of U-Sport eligibility and recruiting rules and regulations, as well as rules of the game. - Strong organizational, administrative and computer skills an asset.
Excellent leadership skills and ability to recruit.
Demonstrated competitive coaching skills.
A proven record of integrity, high principles, and a demonstrated skill in developing/motivating student-athletes both academically and athletically.
Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently.
Ability to foster a cooperative work environment with members of the department and other units within the University.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
A pleasant personality together with a positive attitude is essential.
Flexible approach to work; this role is required to work outside traditional office hours including evenings and weekends as well as, travel as necessary.
Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check - Vulnerable Sector Check.
Additional Assets
Working towards NCCP Level III certification.
Previous coaching experience at the University or National level, or equivalent.
