The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering invites applications for a tenure-track appointment at the Assistant or Associate Professor level. Applicants should have expertise in Nanomaterials, and an interest to lead collaboration with colleagues both within the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and with other units in the Faculty. The target start date is July 1, 2022, although this is flexible.
The candidate’s research interests are expected to be focused on the novel, emergent, or enhanced properties of materials that emerge when their microstructure is engineered at the nanoscale. Emerging leaders in experimental, theoretical, or computational research in nanomaterials are encouraged to apply. Application areas of interest include lightweight, high strength materials; materials for high-strain rate and impact applications; energy storage materials; biomedical technologies and therapies; or advanced aerospace components. The ideal candidate has the experience and contacts within a significant sector of engineering to attract and lead industrially-sponsored research. The candidate should also have the vision and capabilities to lead interdisciplinary, multi-institution, research projects in their area of specialization. Candidates seeking a balanced academic career involving significant research, supervision and training of a research team of graduate and undergraduate students, and innovative teaching in undergraduate engineering programs are ideal. We seek candidates that have a desire to encourage young people, and especially women, to pursue a technical, engineering career.
About the Academic Unit

At the Bachelor’s level, the Department offers degrees in Mechanical, Aerospace, Biomedical & Mechanical, and Sustainable & Renewable Energy Engineering, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. We are a research- intensive department with over 300 graduate students at the Masters and PhD levels.
Our substantial strength in Aerospace Engineering and emerging strength and growth in the areas of Biomedical Engineering and Sustainable Energy Engineering create a uniquely interdisciplinary, diverse research environment.
There are excellent opportunities for collaboration with industry, government institutes and laboratories, and established faculty members in the Department and across campus. Information on the Department is available at http://carleton.ca/mae.
The successful candidate is required to have a Ph.D. in engineering, as well as being dedicated to teaching, research, and the engineering profession, and be able to develop research collaborations with industry, become an effective undergraduate and graduate teacher and graduate-student supervisor, and be able to attract funding to support independent research programs yielding high-quality peer-reviewed publications. Licensure with a Canadian professional engineering association is necessary at the time of appointment or within three years of appointment.
