The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor level in the fields of Ice Core Science and Glaciology. The position has a starting date of July 1, 2023. Consideration will be given to individuals whose expertise and research align with and complement those of current faculty members, particularly those associated with the Canadian Ice Core Laboratory (CICL), a national facility for the archiving and study of Canadian ice cores. A key responsibility of this position will be to provide leadership as the Academic Director of CICL. The Academic Director will work closely with the Executive Director of CICL to help establish and maintain CICL as a regional, national and global center of excellence in research, education and engagement on issues related to environmental changes in the Canadian North. CICL includes the national ice core collection, with samples drilled from across the Canadian Arctic including the Devon, Penny and Prince of Wales ice caps, and from alpine regions of western Canada.
The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and the University of Alberta have established strengths in Cryospheric Sciences, and a vibrant research community focused on northern Canada and mountain environments, including the Canadian Mountain Network and the Permafrost Archives Science Laboratory. CICL hosts excellent analytical and core preparation facilities, including a CRDS water isotope analyzer, grain size analyzer, ion chromatography, fluorescence spectroscopy, ice core drilling equipment, and freezer cutting room and ice core imaging capabilities. These facilities are complemented by ICP-MS, Computed Tomography and DNA extraction facilities for frozen samples within the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences .
Candidates must hold a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated track record in developing an innovative and robust externally-funded research program; in engaging with relevant domestic and international research networks; and in high-calibre teaching and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Research portfolios should include a record of publications and presentations in high impact venues, a successful research funding history, and a summary of planned research projects. Supervisory and teaching potential should be documented via previous teaching experience, letters of reference, and a statement of teaching philosophy.
