Faculty of Arts: Area Service Centre 2

Position Summary:

The Area Manager, Finance, is responsible for providing leadership, professional advice and functional guidance in shaping the ASC’s mission in line with its values and culture. As part of the management team for a designated ASC, the incumbent will plan, develop and implement administrative procedures, policies and processes in support of the ASC’s objectives.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Provides advice to assigned departments and departmental Chairs regarding Faculty and University policies and procedures in the area of finance.

  • Prepares and submits operating and research budgets for departments.

  • Collaborates with the department Chairs and professors to resolve budgetary issues and shortfalls.

  • Provides quarterly fund monitoring for professors in the unit

  • Acts as approver/reviewer for a variety of financial transactions related to day-to-day operations of the units within the ASC (e.g. MMP, Pcard, expense reports, invoice payments, etc.).

  • Ensures effective implementation of financial initiatives/programs/policies introduced by the Centre/Faculty/University; finds ways to integrate new financial policies efficiently within the Centre environment

  • Supervises support staff in the area of Finance (Research Fin Administrator and Administrative Coordinator). Plans schedules and directs the work of staff in these areas and in accordance with the ASC’s goals and objectives and monitors performance.

  • Oversees the financial operations of the units for which the ASC provides support.

  • Engages regularly with other managers within the Centre to ensure that goals and objectives are aligned and that information and record- keeping is complete, consistent, and transparent to all.

  • Responsible for the appointment of research (AMURE) and non-academic casuals (AMUSE), as well as payment of Guest Lecturers

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

Experience in administrating Finance policies and procedures. Knowledge of Human Resources policies is an asset. Demonstrated financial management skills, including budget planning, and accounting and financial principals and procedures. Demonstrated knowledge of McGill’s academic and non- academic policies and procedures. Ability to work well under pressure to meet specific deadlines. Ability to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of academics and administrative staff. Strong communication skills both written and spoken. Proven experience in leading and supervising a team of employees. Strong Organizational skills and proven ability to work independently, problem solve and manage multiple projects. Strong analytical skills. Ability to work well under pressure in an environment with shifting priorities. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with  multiple unit and university-wide stakeholders. Demonstrated interpersonal communications skills with the ability maintain a high degree of diplomacy and confidentiality. Strong computer skills, including knowledge of Minerva, Banner (FIS, HRIS), databases and Crystal Reports. Ability to work independently with customer service skills to assess needs, identify requirements, and recommend solutions. English, spoken and written. French, spoken and read. Knowledge and experience with Workday are an asset.
