Deadline: 21 Aug 2023

To assist the University in complying with mandatory reporting requirements of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (R203(3) (e)), please include the first digit of your Canadian Social Insurance Number in your application. If you do not have a Canadian Social Insurance Number, please indicate this in your application.

This position offers a benefits package found at Postdoctoral Fellows Benefits .

The Department of Computing Science, and Amii, at the University of Alberta has an immediate opening for one or two postdoctoral fellows to work with the Amii Fellows in multiple areas of Artificial Intelligence research.

The Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (Amii) is one of three centers of excellence in the Pan- Canadian AI strategy. Amii is establishing an Amii-wide post-doc position for post-docs to work with the Amii Fellows. One strength of Amii is the collaborative nature of the centre. Thus, the ideal candidate will work with two or more fellows to conduct novel and transformative research.

The appointment will initially be for a one-year term and will be renewable for an additional year subject to the availability of funding and satisfactory performance.

The postdoctoral fellow will work in a multi-disciplinary group of computer scientists and their students. For information about the Amii Fellows and their research, see our people . Applicants are not required to be working directly in the area of an Amii fellow as long as they can make a compelling research proposal that connects the proposed work. For example, someone may propose working with fellows to explore the equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) implications of machine learning, even if the fellows are not directly working on research related to EDI. As the fellows perform research in broad areas of AI, candidates working in areas outside of machine learning are also encouraged to apply.

Please read application instructions carefully; incomplete applications will not be considered.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, CV, 1-2 page research statement, and contact information for 2-5 references to [email protected]. Additional material may be submitted at the discretion of the candidate.

Be sure that the following details are included:

  • Cover letter: Which fellows you would like to work with and when you would be available to begin.

  • CV: Full details of all publications.

  • Research statement: A plan of research that intersects with more than one Amii fellow.

  • [Optional] Additional material (e.g. more detail about activities mentoring underrepresented students) that provides additional depth to your application.

The starting date for this position is negotiable. The review of applications will begin on June 5th. The search will continue until suitable candidates are found.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. If suitable Canadian citizens or permanent residents cannot be found, other individuals will be considered. The University of Alberta is committed to an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workforce. We welcome applications from all qualified persons. We especially encourage women; First Nations, Métis and Inuit persons; members of visible minority groups; persons with disabilities; persons of any sexual orientation or gender identity and expression; and all those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas and the University to apply.
