Accelerator Postdoc for TRIUMF Terahertz Photon Source

Updated: about 2 months ago
Location: Northern British Columbia Fort Nelson, BRITISH COLUMBIA
Deadline: 30 Mar 2024

Discover TRIUMF , Canada's particle accelerator centre. We are a publicly funded, not-for-profit research lab that is a hub for discovery and innovation.

Our mission is to serve as Canada’s particle accelerator centre.  We advance isotope science and technology, both fundamental and applied.  We collaborate across communities and disciplines, from nuclear and particle physics to the life and material sciences.  We discover and innovate, inspire and educate, creating knowledge and opportunity for all.

TRIUMF's diverse community of nearly 600 multidisciplinary researchers, engineers, technicians, tradespeople, staff, and students create a unique incubator for Canadian excellence, as well as a portal to premier global collaborations.  Fueling innovation and improving lives, we are committed to accelerating discovery and shaping a better world.

TRIUMF has recently received funding to build a Terahertz photon source, which will be powered by the existing 30 MeV superconducting electron linear accelerator, the e-linac. In addition to the present infrastructure, the Terahertz project necessitates the construction of a DC photo gun, a new beam transport system to the injector cavity, a buncher and a dedicated bunch compressor to produce the short electron bunches required for coherent emission of THz radiation.

The advertised position is associated with providing accelerator physics support to the project. The incumbent will produce a beam optics design of all the new beam transport and bunch compression sections. This includes developing specifications in consultation with other team members, performing beam optics and space charge dominated beam dynamics simulations, proposing a design to the team for review, and overseeing the detailed design and fabrication stages.  Optionally, and depending on the availability of research funding, the term of the position may be extended to allow the incumbent to participate in the installation and commissioning phases.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform beam optics and beam dynamics simulations to optimize the accelerator structure for the coherent THz radiation production.
  • Work in close collaboration with other TRIUMF beam physicists to integrate the new components into the existing layout.
  • Produces documentation including requirement specifications, design notes and commissioning plans.
  • Participates in the weekly Beam Physics Department meeting.
  • Maintains international connections in accelerator physics and beam instrumentation.
  • Optionally: participate in testing, installation and commissioning of accelerator components.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Sound knowledge of theoretical and experimental aspects of accelerator physics is required for the position. Practical experience in construction and commissioning of particle accelerators, especially modern low emittance photoemission driven electron injectors, would be beneficial. Previous experience in performing beam dynamic simulations involving space charge using computer codes such as ASTRA, WARP or similar will be considered advantageous.

NUCLEAR ENERGY WORKER:

The position requires the incumbent to be trained and designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). Training would be provided by TRIUMF.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Must have a Ph.D. in accelerator physics (received within 5 years), with a minimum of 2 years of experience in designing accelerator systems (inclusive of the experience acquired as a Ph.D. student).

Employment Type: 2-year Fixed Term
