The University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Medicine, Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) in partnership with Alberta Health Services and Covenant Health, invites applications for an Academic Director and Clinical Section Chief. Located in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, the Faculty has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions. The University is currently home to more than 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff. 

The Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in the Department of Medicine is home to 10 academic faculty members and 33 clinical faculty members. The Division has one of the oldest and best known PMR residency training programs in Canada and currently has 13 full-time trainees. In addition to clinical training, the Division of PMR has many strong and well-funded researchers, particularly in the areas of spinal cord injury recovery and treatment as well as neuro-prosthetics and neural integration. Our Division members have been the recipients of many national and international awards recognizing their contributions to rehabilitation science and education. A CFI Centre for Neuro-rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Neuroscience is also under the direction of faculty in our Division. The Division of PMR is also strongly associated with the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, one of the largest freestanding rehabilitation hospitals in North America, serving all of Northern Alberta, parts of British Columbia, and northern Canada.

The successful candidate will be an MD (or equivalent) with certification in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation with the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA) as clinical service is required as part of this appointment. Additional academic training would be an asset. The ideal candidate will have previous medical leadership experience in a dynamic academic and healthcare environment, preferably in an established academic role. This leadership position also includes appointment as Section Chief within Alberta Health Services in the Edmonton Zone Department of Clinical Neurosciences. Candidates must have significant experience in the clinical service arena as well as the academic environment and must understand the interplay between these two pillars of academic medicine.

Individuals with strong academic and research interests in any area of rehabilitation science or education are encouraged to apply. A successful record of research funding or other academic recognition would also be an asset.

Key accountabilities of the Division Director position are to the Chair, Department of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry as well as the Department Head, Alberta Health Services Department of Clinical Neurosciences.

The successful candidate will be offered a contingent tenured or tenure-track appointment in the Department of Medicine, which is in accordance with the University of Alberta Faculty Agreement. Academic rank would be commensurate with previous experience and eligibility.

Remuneration for this position is based on the Academic Medicine and Health Services Program (AMHSP) and is highly competitive. Income is in accordance with a step-wise progression package and will be commensurate with education and experience. Successful candidates for the Division Director and Section Chief position could expect appointment at or near the top of the remuneration grid. Tenure stream positions also have a comprehensive benefit package in accordance with the Faculty Agreement.
