Position located at Macdonald Campus Farm (Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue).Only candidates who are Canadian citizens or Canadian Permanent residents will be considered. International workers who cannot legally work in Canada should not apply.


Position Summary:

Performs technical and animal health duties in a dairy facility used for teaching and research.   Work will take place primarily on the second shift (12:30 to 9:00 p.m.)

Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs technical and animal husbandry duties related to housing, maintenance, experimental use and breeding of animals. Participates in projects and experiments. Administers medications. Acts as resource person. Maintains records. Maintains equipment.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

(i) Performs technical duties related to animal husbandry. Participates in projects and experiments.
(iii) Verifies and monitors the animals’ state of health. Observes and notes their behaviour. Verifies feed consumption. Performs basic examinations.
(iv) Assumes responsibility for the care, feeding, handling and moving of animals. Verifies and monitors environmental conditions and the hygiene and accommodations of animals.
(v) Administers medications and treatments prescribed for animals.
(vii) Acts as resource person. Instructs others on procedures and operation of equipment. Provides technical guidance and assistance concerning work methods, the use of equipment and techniques, and the analysis of results.
Maintains equipment, performs minor repairs and arranges for service and major repairs.
(x) Ensures compliance with safety regulations in the use of equipment. Ensures proper storage, handling and disposal of hazardous materials.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Preferred Education: DEC III in Farm Management Technology or Animal Health Technology.

Work will take place primarily on the second shift (12:30 to 9:00 p.m.) and will include one week-end day [e.g. Tuesday to Saturday  OR  Sunday to Thursday]. 

Demonstrated ability to handle large farm animals and to operate equipment.  Demonstrated knowledge of animal husbandry and reproduction practices in dairy cattle.  Demonstrated ability to feed, milk and care for dairy cattle, recognize signs of ill health and to administer prescribed treatments.  Ability to assist cows at calving and apply protocol for newborn calves.  Ability to instruct others on work methods.  Must be able to perform very strenuous physical duties, including climbing ladders, repetitive bending/crouching, pushing or pulling large objects, and lifting/carrying heavy weights (up to 50 lbs.) or more.  Demonstrated ability to follow instructions and attention to detail.  Must be self-motivated and able to work alone and in a team environment.  Basic computer and math skills.  Languages:  English spoken and written; French spoken.

Work schedule could include week-ends, including being part of a rotating on-call team. May be required to occasionally work on statutory holidays, or work overtime when necessary.

Hourly Salary:

(MUNACA Level 09) $22.25 - $30.68
