POST DOC IN SOCIO-ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS
Agência FAPESP: The Thematic Project “After Hydropower Dams: Social and Environmental Processes that occur after the Construction of Belo Monte, Jirau and Santo Antonio in the Brazilian Amazon” with funding from FAPESP, offers a Postdoctoral Fellowship at NEPAM in the Universidade Estadual de Campinas.
The Fellowship holder will use the tools of human-environment research to assess the social, cultural and economic impacts experienced by two regions in Amazonia after the construction of Hydroelectric Dams, namely Belo Monte, Jirau, and Santo Antônio. Many human communities were relocated due to the creation of the reservoirs that flooded traditional communities, and others were affected by urban expansion, deforestation, and changes in the quality of life in areas near dams. This postdoc will focus on examining how human communities have been changed by the location of hydropower dams near them, using interdisciplinary methods coming from the social and environmental sciences.
This postdoc will: Assemble and synthesize the existing data collected for the two basins (Xingu and Madeira) before the dam was built; Develop with the PI a social survey instrument to be used to assess what the impacts have been on communities in the two river basins ten years after the construction ended; Conduct household surveys in collaboration with the larger team and work with scholars in Altamira and Porto Velho to assess how people have been adapting to, or not, to the changes brought by the dam.
The postdoc will be expected to spend a minimum of 5 months in the field each year carrying out this fieldwork, and to visit colleagues collaborating at University of São Paulo (USP), Federal University of Pará (UFPA), Universidade Federal de Rondonia (UNIR), and at Michigan State University (MSU/USA). The postdoc will be based at Unicamp in the department of NEPAM. Additionally, a minimum of one month each year in Michigan will be expected, to collaborate with the PI on publications and fieldwork coordination. The postdoc will collaborate with another postdoc of the same thematic project that will be focusing on the fisheries ecology in both basins. The postdoc is expected to work with considerable independence but given guidance by the PI and other collaborating senior faculty. The postdoc will have assistance some months of the year from doctoral students from Unicamp funded by this project, and undergraduate students from UFPA, Altamira campus, and UNIR, who will benefit from the research experience, work as research assistants, and better prepare them for a career in science.
The project is coordinated by Prof. Emilio F. Moran, together with Lucia da Costa Ferreira of NEPAM at Unicamp and Prof. Evandro Moretto of USP. The thematic project is part of the program SPEC, São Paulo Excellence Chairs of FAPESP that brings senior scholars to Brazil. The coordinator is Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University and Visiting Researcher at Unicamp.
The candidate must have a PhD in the Social Sciences or preferably in an interdisciplinary program on human-environment research; have a commitment to interdisciplinary research; field experience in the Amazon with fishing communities is desirable and the candidate must demonstrate experience in interviewing rural populations in the biome; fluency in English and Portuguese are essential, preferably with publications in international journals.
The selection process will take place in two stages. In the first one, the candidate will send the required documentation to the project coordinator by email before March 21, 2020. In the second stage, the coordinator will interview the top applicants, and make a final decision. Applicants need to send a letter of interest to Prof. Moran indicating their qualifications for the project, a copy of their Curriculum Vitae or Sumula Curricular, a copy of the doctoral degree, and two letters of recommendation to [email protected] .
Deadline for applications is March 21, 2020. More information about this opportunity are found at www.fapesp.br/oportunidades .
The postdoc is available to Brazilian and foreign applicants. The Fellowship holder must establish an address in Campinas, Sao Paulo state, where the project is based. The candidate selected for the Postdoc Fellowship will receive R$7,373.10 (monthly) and a Technical Reserve. The technical reserve is equivalent to 15% of the annual value of the Fellowship and is meant to provide resources for unexpected expenses, directly related to the research. If the fellowship holder lives outside of Campinas, SP, and needs to move from their hometown to Campinas, they can ask for financial assistance through the Auxílio Instalação.
