Offer Description
The Thematic Project “Sustainable citriculture through controlled release of antibacterial compounds from microgel-based formulations” is part of a Brazil/Holland bilateral cooperation that aims to develop formulations to control citrus canker. This project is funded by FAPESP and the Dutch agency NWO. Experiments are conducted at the Institute of Biosciences of Rio Claro (IBRC), State University of São Paulo (UNESP), and at the Universities of Maastricht and Groningen, The Netherlands. The Brazilian group has a post-doc position open in the area of Phytopathology/Plant Protection. The duration of the fellowship is 2 years, renewable for another 2 years depending on the candidate's commitment and performance. Successful applicants will be working in a multi-disciplinary environment coordinated by Prof. Henrique Ferreira and Dr. Michel Brienzo (IBRC-UNESP) and Prof. Dirk-Jan Scheffers (University of Groningen). The candidate must have previous experience in studies of Plant Physiology, phytopathology, bacteriology, phytopathometry, molecular biology and development of agricultural defensives.
The selected candidate is expected to:
1) Evaluate the effectiveness of antibacterial compounds and formulations against Xanthomonas citri
2) Determine the phytotoxicity of the formulations developed against indicator plants
3) Interpret results of toxicity against pollinators and cytotoxicity against cellular models
4) Evaluate the protective potential of citrus formulations against infection by X. citri (perform experiments in greenhouse and help field evaluations)
5) Monitor physiological parameters of citrus plants exposed to antibacterial formulations
6) Interpret the results of experiments to evaluate the stability and degradation of components, components of the formulations/defensives to be developed
Prerequisites for the position:
- To hold a doctorate in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology/Bacteriology, Botany, Plant Physiology, Agronomy, Phytopathology or related areas.
- Fluent in English
- Availability to travel
