Offer Description

In this project the resarcher will sinthetize graphene layers in situ and in-operands on systems with copper/amorphous carbon (Cu/a-C) coatings. The tribological performance of the synthesized films will be assessed under high contact pressures and different lubrication conditions, seeking to obtain the phenomenon of superlubricity in this system. The coatings will be synthesized on the top surface without transferring the graphene from the substrate to the surface of the material. The objective of this work will be to evaluate the ability to form graphene sheets on thin copper films for tribological applications with a focus on reducing the coefficient of friction and wear in automotive components. As secondary objectives, the following are defined:

• Synthesis of the a-C and Cu layers using the physical vapor deposition technique;

• Catalysis and formation of graphene layers on Cu;

• Analysis of the lubricity of graphene formed using tribological tests.

• Analysis of the tribochemical conditions for forming graphene layers on copper during tribological contact.

Friction coefficients lower than 0.01, characteristics of superlubricity between the matching surfaces are expected. This graphene production route and the use of graphene for tribological applications has not yet been applied in conventional mechanical systems, such as gears or combustion engines, which makes this project unique.
