The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Department of Philosophy, History and Art is an internationally high-quality center for research and teaching, dating back to the year the university was founded in 1640. The discipline of theoretical philosophy at the University of Helsinki has a strong international research tradition in systematic philosophy. The discipline currently has three professors and two university lecturers, in addition to several scholars and doctoral students working in the field. Theoretical philosophy has been very successful in obtaining external research funding.

The Faculty of Arts invites applications to the Department of Philosophy, History and Art for the position of

UNIVERSITY LECTURER OF THEORETICAL PHILOSOPHY

into permanent employment starting from 1.8.2022. The appointment starts with a trial period of six months.

The university lecturer will be responsible for teaching theoretical philosophy in Bachelor's and Master's programs together with other teachers. The university lecturer in theoretical philosophy will be responsible for several courses in the Bachelor and Master Programmes in Philosophy, including running the Bachelor’s and Master’s seminars (with the Professors and the other Lecturer of the discipline). The university lecturer will also actively contribute to the planning and development of teaching.

The appointee must hold an applicable doctoral degree and have demonstrable teaching experience relevant to the post. The lecturer is expected to provide teaching in at least logic (I and II) and in philosophy of language, and to have research expertise in at least one of the following areas: philosophical logic, philosophy of language, metaphysics, and continental philosophy. Philosophical breadth, both of expertise and teaching competence, is considered an asset.

SELECTION CRITERIA
According to the regulations of the University of Helsinki, an appointee to the position of University Lecturer must hold an applicable doctoral degree, and be able to provide high-quality teaching based on research and to supervise theses and dissertations.

When assessing the qualifications of applicants, attention will be paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits, and a teaching demonstration. An active research profile and international publications and networks are required qualifications. Success in obtaining research funding is considered an asset.

Pursuant to section 1 of the Government Decree on Universities (770/2009), appointees to teaching positions at the University of Helsinki must be proficient in the language in which they provide instruction, i.e., Finnish or Swedish. The teaching language for this position is Finnish. If the person selected does not speak Finnish, they are required to acquire sufficient Finnish language skills to teach within two years. Support is provided for language learning. Successful completion of the task also requires a good command of English.

WE OFFER
The assignment provides an opportunity to work in an inspiring, international and multidisciplinary environment. The salary for the position will be based on levels 5−6 of the requirement scheme for teaching and research positions in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. The appointee’s gross monthly salary will range from €3,300 to €4,500, depending on one’s qualifications and experience.
