TENURE TRACK OR FULL PROFESSOR IN Social and legal implications of Artificial Intelligence
The position is part of the University of Helsinki profiling action on ‘Mind and Matter – foundations of information, intelligence and consciousness’, aiming to strengthen new interdisciplinary research areas at the university and the appointed candidate is expected to co-operate with the other tenure track professors in this area. Mind and Matter consists of seven tenure track positions: "Social and legal implications of AI", "Natural and artificial cognitive systems", "Experimental mind and brain research", "Philosophy of mind and matter", "Artificial and human intelligence", "Implications of the use of AI on learning and education", and "Foundations of quantum information, logic, and computing”.
We are looking for applicants who have a suitable background in the social sciences or law and whose research is focused on digitalization and social uses of artificial intelligence. We expect the applicant to have substantive expertise in at least one of the following areas: algorithmic governance and its political and institutional consequences; citizenship rights in a digital world; social legitimacy and legal regulation of uses of data and AI; or cyber- and hate crime and media criminology. Moreover, theoretical expertise required to bridge social sciences and law (especially science and technology studies) and broad methodological competence (especially computational methods) will be regarded as valuable merits.
The appointee is expected to conduct research at a high international level. We expect the appointee to develop a strong network of international and interdisciplinary cooperation and collaboration. The selected candidate will be teaching in relevant Bachelor and Master level study programs in the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Faculty of Law. In addition, the appointee will participate in doctoral education, collaborate with other researchers in the Mind and Matter action, acquire research funding for his or her research group, and participate in the interaction between science and society at large.
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track system), depending on his/her qualifications and career stage. An appointee to the position of assistant/associate professor within the tenure track system shall hold a doctoral degree, have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work and have the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, applicants for assistant/associate professorships shall demonstrate their capability and motivation as regards an academic career through publications and other means.
An appointee to a full professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, along with the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching as well as to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the field of research that he or she represents. Holders of professorships shall also have the skills necessary to serve as academic leaders.
To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills. If the appointee is not proficient in Finnish or Swedish, he/she is expected to acquire moderate proficiency within a reasonable time after the appointment. Support for language studies is offered.
When assessing the qualifications of each applicant, attention will be paid to:

• success in obtaining external research funding
• leading of scientific research
• international research experience
• activity in the academic community
• teaching experience, supervision of theses and dissertations and other pedagogical merits
• leadership and interaction skills
• vision of how the applicant intends to develop the field and focus his or her research

Annual gross salary for a full professor varies between 64,000 and 96,000 euros, and for an assistant/associate professor between 50,000 and 68,500 euros, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.
