Project description

The laboratory of Bioengineering at Earth & Life Institute (Applied Microbiology Department, University of Louvain, Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, ), is seeking a highly motivated young scientist to take in charge an experimental research . As part of a larger project on biowaste valorization (envisioned for 3 years), the research will focus on lignin extraction from lignocellulosic biomass found locally, its separation and purification for further use. In addition, the project will also focus on investigating a microbial (electro)elongation process integrated with acidogenic fermentation of fermentable biowastes, to ensure the elongation of short chain carboxylates. The research will investigate the conditions required to induce the elongation of acetic and butyric acids to the longer chain, higher value, caproic and caprylic acids, from brewery solid wastes.

The experimental research work will include the design and operation of the experimental set-up, the chemical analyses to monitor the processes, and the investigation of the influence of the operation conditions on the extraction/conversion efficiency, with the perspective to scale-up the process. The research is part of a collaborative project with two other research partners in the Brussels Region.

Candidate profile:

  • Young Master of Science in Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Bioengineering or other related to the field of bioprocessing and bioproducts, obtained before September 2019 and not earlier than 2016.
  • Preferably an interest and/or experience in biomass pretreatment processes, fermentation, bioseparation and chemical analysis.
  • Research-minded, ability to adapt to various scientific approaches and integrate real life constraints in the scientific approach.
  • Good practical and experimental skills.
  • Rigour, responsibility, self-motivation, autonomy, team-spirit.
  • Good scientific communication skills.
  • Fluent English and preferably knowledge of French.

How to apply:

Interested candidates should contact the promotor directly, sending a CV and a motivation letter. Applications will be accepted until August 15, 2019.
