Offer Description

The research expert in Numerical Simulations of Extreme Astrophysical Systems will lead the efforts of studying extreme astrophysical systems as gravitational-wave sources through numerical simulations. 

This includes the following responsibilities:

  • You will set up your own research line on simulating extreme astrophysical systems as gravitational-wave sources, ideally complementary with and strengthening the ongoing activities at KU Leuven;
  • You will develop our in-house general-relativistic magneto-hydrodynamical simulation tools, including gmunu and MPI-AMRVAC, to broaden their scope and increase their scalability; 
  • You build bridges that strengthen the collaboration between the various research units and departments involved in numerical modeling and high-performance computing both at KU Leuven and internationally.

We offer a full-time, permanent employment position, with a contract in the staff category of Research Expert within the Research Management structure, with all the related benefits. The salary scale will be determined by your seniority and all relevant experience, in a direct negotiation with the HR service of the KU Leuven.

Eligibility criteria
  • PhD degree in physics, astrophysics, engineering or a related field; 
  • Experience in research and development on simulating astrophysical systems with relativistic (magneto-)hydrodynamics codes; 
  • Experience in managing/maintaining scientific software libraries; 
  • Knowledge of or interest in a broad range of technologies relevant for high-performance and heterogeneous computing; 
  • Excellent communication skills and the skill and affinity to interact fluently in international multicultural consortia; 
  • Strong organisational skills, a cooperative attitude and the ability to work independently; 
  • Experience with writing successful grant proposals.
