Professor 'Mobility and Big Data Processing'

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Faculty of Engineering, Department Elektronica en informatica, is looking for a part-time professor

More concretely your work package contains:

Education and Research domain:

Electronics and informatics - multidimensional signal processing and communication.

Education tasks:

You will run courses in the Master in Applied Computer Sciences (MACS): more specifically, courses in programming and scripting languages, with a focus on data science applications. The content of these courses is meant to facilitate the transition from graduates of the MACS program into a data scientist position in industry. Courses are mainly taught in English to an international group of students with various backgrounds.

Research tasks:

You will be part of the Electronics and Informatics department, more specifically the research group on multidimensional signal processing and communication (IRIS). The goal is to build a structural collaboration with this group in the field of (smart) mobility. Two main research poles are considered:

  • Computer vision applications in mobility: this activity focusses on the development of state-of-the-art computer vision algorithms, optimized for deployment in standalone low-power embedded devices such as smart cameras or large-scale cloud computing platforms;
  • Big data processing for traffic analytics: large volumes of traffic information from heterogeneous sensors are being generated every day. This research pole focusses on fusing the information from different data sources (ANPR cameras, counting loops, floating car data, etc) in order to create an optimal view of the present and future traffic situation at the scale of a city or even a larger geographical region. Integrating other data sources in mobility applications, such as weather information, or textual information, such as incident data, will also be a topic of interest.

Both research poles will focus on the development of deep learning models to achieve state of the art results in traffic analytics and traffic prediction.

Close collaboration with other members of the IRIS research group will allow developing your research and innovation activities.

You will collaborate in a national and international context, and detect and develop relevant real-world and industrial applications, and develop effective solutions.

You will be collaborating with other research institutes, industrial partners and with other universities. You will facilitate and organize these interactions, and define joint projects, manage these projects, and report results adequately.

You will (co-)promote PhD theses in the field of mobility and big data processing.

You will organize and (co-)promote internships, master theses, in close collaboration with industrial partners.

Other tasks:

  • You take up responsibilities in faculty (and possibly university) bodies.
  • You will actively contribute to the promotion of the MACS programme and the ETRO department.

For this function, our Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) will serve as your home base.
