The University of Helsinki Faculty of Arts ( ) is Finland’s oldest and largest unit of teaching and research in the arts in terms of the organisation and selection of its disciplines. The Faculty is also a significant international community of research, education and culture.

The Faculty of Arts carries out research and teaching in the languages and literatures of Europe and other parts of the world, totalling close to 40 languages. In addition, general theories in the areas of linguistics, translation studies and comparative literature are developed.

The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term associate/assistant professorship (tenure track), depending on their qualifications and career stage. Further information on the University of Helsinki career path and the tenure track system can be found at .

The Faculty of Arts explores the Japanese and Chinese languages as well as Japanese and Chinese cultures and societies as part of Asian languages. Asian languages play an important role in the Faculty’s research profile, in which they are connected to research on general linguistics and linguistic typology as well as research on Asian cultures. Applications for the present position are sought from researchers who examine Japanese and Chinese from as wide a range of perspectives as possible and have a proven track record particularly in the fields of language contacts and multilingualism in East Asia and/or language in a changing society. Experience in teaching Japanese and Chinese as a foreign language, interest in training teachers of these languages, and knowledge of Asian literature will be considered an asset. Furthermore, the successful applicant will have research methodological skills that can benefit linguistic education and research more broadly in the degree programmes in languages.

The successful applicant will also be a versatile and internationally oriented researcher with profound knowledge of Japanese and Chinese, their use and their history. As a teacher and researcher, the appointee must be able to analyse and explain Japanese- and Chinese-language resources from the perspectives of both language and culture. In addition, the appointee must have the capacity to lead cross-disciplinary research based on Japanese- and Chinese-language sources. The position requires good cooperation skills and the ability to plan and carry out teaching and research projects together with other teaching and research staff in Asian languages, as well as to attend to administrative duties as jointly agreed.

The appointee will work at the Department of Languages, Faculty of Arts, and will teach in the Study Tracks in Japanese and Chinese within the Bachelor’s Programme in Languages, in the Study Track in Asian Languages within the Master’s Programme in Languages, and in the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies. The position is based in Helsinki.

Selection criteria

The qualification requirements for an assistant/associate professor include a doctoral degree, the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills required by the position. In addition, the appointee must have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means.

The qualification requirements for a professor include a doctoral degree, high-level academic qualifications, experience in leading scientific research, the ability to provide high-level research-based teaching and supervise theses, as well as evidence of international cooperation in the research field they represent. In addition, holders of a professorship must have the skills necessary for serving as an academic leader.

When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be paid to both scholarly and teaching qualifications. Scholarly qualifications include scholarly publications and other research results of scholarly value, success in obtaining external research funding, scholarly work outside Finland and international elected positions. As regards teaching qualifications, consideration will be given to teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account will be taken of the applicant’s leadership and interaction skills, as well as activity in the research community.

To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have excellent proficiency in Japanese, (Mandarin) Chinese and English. If the successful applicant is not proficient in Finnish/Swedish, he or she is expected to acquire sufficient proficiency in Finnish/Swedish within a reasonable period of time. The appointee will be offered support for studying the language.

What we offer

The University of Helsinki offers the appointee a first-class research and teaching environment as well as the preconditions necessary for international cooperation ( ). An appointee to an assistant/associate professorship is also provided with opportunities to develop their skills and qualifications so that they can be appointed to a permanent professorship.

The salary will be based on level 7 (assistant/associate professor) or levels 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual gross salary of an assistant/associate professor is approximately €50,000–€68,500, and that of a professor, approximately €64,000–€96,000, depending on their qualifications and work experience.
