Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: 07 Dec 2021

The University of Helsinki is the top academic institution in Finland and one of the top 100 academic institutions in the world: http://www.shanghairanking.com/rankings/arwu/2020 . The international scientific community consists of 40,000 students and researchers. The Faculty of Science, located at the Kumpula campus, focuses on research in physics, atmospheric sciences, geosciences, geography, chemistry, mathematics, statistics and computer science.

The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Helsinki is now seeking to recruit a

POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER

to the X-ray Laboratory (https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/researchgroups/x-ray-laboratory ) starting from the beginning 2022 for a fixed-term employment until July, 2023. The postdoctoral researcher will work in a multidisciplinary research project entitled ‘Breaking a barrier in ocular research: understanding the role of the tear film lipid layer in health and disease’.

The postdoctoral researcher will employ X-ray scattering methods (small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering, grazing incidence diffraction and small angle scattering, SAXS, WAXS, GID, GISAS) using in-house X-ray set-ups and international synchrotron light sources to study the structure and function of tear film lipids. The postdoctoral researcher will work in the soft condensed matter research group, Department of Physics and participate in the active collaboration with the Biomolecular chemistry group, Department of Chemistry and the Helsinki Eye Lab, Faculty of Medicine. In addition to a top-level interdisciplinary research community, the project will offer possibilities for international research visits to world leading international synchrotron light facilities, most importantly, the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF, France) and the MAX-IV Laboratory (Sweden). The postdoctoral researcher is also expected to participate in teaching and supervision duties at the Department of Physics, with a possibility to enroll in official pedagogical training programs.

We offer a competitive salary, local infrastructure and a top-level interdisciplinary and international collaboration network. Our research has a high profile and we publish in top ranking international journals and participate in international conferences of the field.

The appointee must hold an applicable Ph.D. degree in physics or chemistry or a closely related scientific field and possess good English communication skills. Previous experience in experimental material physics, especially using surface X-ray scattering techniques, is considered a merit. In addition to prior knowledge of experimental work, complementing computational skills are mandatory, e.g. using Matlab/Python for data handling and analysis.

The applicants are requested to enclose with their application a motivation letter and CV with experience and academic merits. Please submit your application documents as a one single pdf file using the University of Helsinki Recruitment System via the link Apply for the position. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via SAP Fiori https://msap.helsinki.fi The deadline for applications is on 7th December 2021.
