The Analysis section of the KU Leuven department of mathematics consists of two research groups, one in classical analysis and one in functional analysis. The functional analysis group is led by profs. Gábor Szabó and Stefaan Vaes. The group consists of several PhD students and postdocs. We organize regular seminars, advanced mini-courses, etc. We have numerous international collaborations. We are part of the joint Methusalem research project in pure mathematics, so that all researchers are exposed to a broad spectrum of mathematical research.

Responsibilities

We are looking for a motivated postdoctoral researcher in mathematics with a strong research record in C*-algebra theory or related fields, to work with prof. Gábor Szabó. This position is part of the project “Classification of C*-dynamics: noncommutative symmetry and time evolution” funded by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO).

The successful candidate will develop their own research program in the area of operator algebras. The main research topics of the functional analysis group at KU Leuven concern C*-algebras, C*-dynamics, von Neumann algebras, topological dynamics, ergodic theory and subfactors.

At the mathematics department of KU Leuven, postdocs have a limited amount of teaching duties and have the opportunity to participate in the guidance of students, such as acting as supervisor for a master thesis project. They are expected to animate the mathematical research environment by organizing working seminars, advanced courses, etc.

Profile

PhD in mathematics with a strong research record in C*-algebra theory or a related field. Expertise related to the classification of C*-algebras, C*-dynamical systems or K-theory can be a plus, but is not required. PhD students who will obtain their PhD before the fall of 2023 can apply. Candidates must be fluent in English. No Dutch knowledge is required.

Offer

We offer a competitive two-year postdoctoral fellowship. Subject to availability of funding, this fellowship can be extended by an additional year. The fellowship includes a budget for conference participation and short research stays in other institutions, health insurance and social benefits for the postdoc and their accompanying partner and/or children. The starting date of the position is flexible, but preferably no later than 2 October 2023.
