From 2018 till 2022, Ghent university is coordinating a clinical trial in nutrition, called ‘Micronutriments et Santé de la Mère et de l’Enfant’ (MISAME-III). In this research project, we will evaluate the efficacy of a food supplement for pregnant and lactating women to improve birth weight, foetal and infant growth in rural Burkina Faso. The study is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and done in collaboration with research partners from the US (IFPRI) and Burkina Faso (IRSS and AfricSanté).

A post-doc is recruited at UGent to assist the Principal Investigator (PI) in coordinating new specimen collection and administrative, logistical, and financial tasks related to the project. This role combines project management and academic research activities.

Job description

Academic responsibilities:

  • Design and coordinate a new sub study in which biospecimen samples (e.g. stool, blood, urine, breast milk) will be collected. Responsibilities will include: creating standard operating procedures, applying for ethical clearance, arranging material and shipment, developing trainings, following-up data collection etc.
  • Supervision of data collection, analysis and quality.
  • Dissemination and publications of findings.

Project management responsibilities:

  • Ensure day to day operations of the MISAME study and follow-up on food supplement supply, refresher trainings, and other important recurring matters.
  • Ensure coordination and administrative follow up with external partners involved in the MISAME project, such as the Data Safety and Monitoring Board and the producer of the food supplements.
  • Prepare periodic administrative and financial reports; and organise regular meeting for the MISAME team.

Qualifications and skills

  • You hold a PhD in nutrition, bioscience engineering, biomedical or health-related sciences (or equivalent);
  • Knowledge of bio specimen data collection methods;
  • Expertise in project management (including coordination, planning, note-taking and reporting, communication and liaising with experts and stakeholder groups);
  • Excellent writing and oral presentation skills in English. Working knowledge of French is required;
  • Ability to work independently and effectively in a team of people with different technical backgrounds and varying levels of technical training.
  • Experience in conducting trial in low and middle income countries.
  • Languages:  excellent English and French language skills.
  • Ability to work in a team.

  • Based at UGent, Gent Belgium, with occasional short-term travel to Burkina Faso if needed.
