LABORATORY ENGINEER (Staff scientist) SMEAR-Agri

University of Helsinki is recruiting a Laboratory Engineer (staff scientist) to work in a research infrastructure project that establishes and maintains state-of-the-art research stations (SMEAR-Agri Viikki) at Viikki Research Farm of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and at Haltiala farm (SMEAR-Agri Haltiala) owned by the City of Helsinki. The stations are part of the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) infrastructures and are aimed for long-term and continuous monitoring of climate and air quality impacts of northern agriculture.

The Laboratory Engineer (staff scientist) will join Environmental Soil Science unit comprising of about 20 scientists, teachers, and technical staff doing research on soil processes, soil-environment interactions, and the exchange of greenhouse gases in various ecosystems.

Tasks:
Main responsibilities to develop and coordinate automated measurement systems for ecophysiology and trace gas fluxes, linked to SMEAR-Agri research station at Viikki Research Farm and affiliated to both the faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR). The SMEAR-Agri research infrastructure is part of INAR RI Agriculture consortium and is built to fulfill the requirements of European research infrastructures ICOS, ACTRIS and ecosystem ESFRIs AnaEE and eLTER, with emphasis on state-of-the-art techniques and experimental setups. You will be part of research community at the Environmental Soil Science unit of the Department of Agriculture, and in close collaboration with one IT-technician and an Academy of Finland postdoctoral fellow with responsibilities to develop, optimize and manage different automatized measurements in laboratory and field conditions.

Doctoral degree is required and experience in setting up and maintaining linux-based minicomputers (Raspberry Pi), object-oriented and threading-based programming with Python 3 and automated serial communication with measurement and controller devices is necessary. Position is for 3 years, it is placed in Viikki campus of the University of Helsinki, it can be started 1st of October 2021 onwards.

The salary is based on the Finnish university salary system demand level 8-10 and the gross monthly salary will be ca. 3 000 - 4 400 euros per month depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.
