DOCTORAL STUDENT

Position is for two years starting from January 1, 2022.

The main responsibility of the doctoral student will be to conduct a doctoral dissertation in the WELLS project. In addition, the position requires different tasks in the research project and teaching.

The WELLS project examines and promotes students’ and teacher’s well-being in higher education. We aim to explore the interrelationship between well-being, their experiences of burnout, psychological flexibility and performance. The objective is also to develop an integrated intervention for university students and teachers to support stress tolerance and well-being. Our studies apply a mixed method approach, which combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as biophysical measurements. The research group functions mainly in the University of Helsinki but we have many collaborators nationally and internationally. The successful applicant should have good cooperation skills, capability to do research independently, genuine interest in developing well-being and conducting mixed method research. The applicant must hold an applicable master’s degree (for example in education, psychology or health sciences). The appointee should also either have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki by the start of the appointment or apply for the right and obtain it within the probationary period of six months of their appointment. Previous experience with different research methods (biophysical, quantitative and qualitative) and with well-being at work and studies is appreciated. The positions requires oral and written communication in English.

The salary will be based on levels 2-4 of the requirement level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities (requirement level 2 for starting doctoral student; requirement level 3 when doctoral thesis at the mid-point; requirement level 4 when the public examination is to be held in roughly a year). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be ca. 2400 euros/month on requirement level 2. The employment contract will include a probationary period of six months.
