Your personal sphere of play:


As a PhD student (PraeDoc) you will work in the Spatial Data Science and GeoCommuniaction group lead by Krzysztof Janowicz consisting of more than a dozen international researchers including PhD students, postdocs, faculty, scientific programmers, and other project staff with a diverse set of backgrounds and expertises including geocommunication, geo-visualization, geo-semantics, geographc infomation retrieval, social sensing, GeoAI, and knowledge graphs. We just started a new project with international partners to model, mine, and visualize the spatio-temporal scope (validity range) of human expertise to help humanitarian relief organizations and others in getting the right boots on the ground as soon as possible. For instance, a massive landslide in Venezuela requires different human relief experts than a flood in China or a cyclon in Mozambique. Understanding expertise and how it changes over time and space is important for many other downstream tasks as well and can be approached from many different perspectives be it geosommunication and visualization, machine learning, (hazard) ontologies to model experties themes, geographic information retrieval, knowledge graphs, FAIR data management, and so forth, and we hope you will help us explore multiple of these directions and others that suite your interests. Your future tasks:

You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • While your key task well be research, work amy also include teaching and adminstration (e.g., co-organizing academic events such as workshops)
  • Participation in research projects/research studies
  • Participation in publications/academic articles/presentations
  • You work on your dissertation and its completion.
  • Involvement in the organization of meetings, conferences, symposiums. This may involve international travel.
  • Communicate and collaborate with international partners including major international industry players and NGOs.


This is part of your personality:


  • Completed Master's/Diploma degree in Geoinformatics, GIScience, Cognitive Science, Computer Science, Data Science, Geography, or related disciplines.
  • Ideally some experience in scientific writing and research methods (e.g., as part of your Master's thesis).
  • Experiecne in using Geographic Information Systems (GIS); ideally also Spatial Data Science libraries, e.g., GeoPandas.
  • Software engineering skills (at least on a basic level e.g., Python, Java)
  • Interest in knowledge graphs, geographic information retrieval, and/or GeoAI is a plus.
  • Experience in geovisualization/geocommunication is a plus.
  • Strong team skills and able to work in international teams
  • You are self-motivated, eager to grow, and able to work independently.
  • You are able to manage project work e.g., write documentations, deliver project results in time, be able to present them to others.
  • Good English langauage skills are required.
  • You are looking forward to new tasks and are willing to be a part of scientific discourse.
