Reference number : 13709
The Department of Mineralogy and Crystallography at the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy invites applications for a university assistant (praedoc) for a PhD research project in the field of experimental high-pressure crystallography.
The successful candidate is supposed to work on high-pressure kinetics of salt-hydrate/ammoniate/carbonate formation with respect to thermochemical energy storage. We are looking for a person with a distinct interest for experimental work, in particular time-resolved X-ray diffraction using in-house and synchrotron sources.
We are offering modern X-ray facilities, a diamond-anvil high-pressure lab, spectroscopy labs (Raman, IR, UV-VIS), and access to other analytical facilities (EMPA, SEM, FEG-SEM with FIB, TEM with electron diffraction).
The PhD candidate will be member of the Vienna International School of Earth and Space Sciences VISESS (https://visess.univie.ac.at).
The contract duration is 4 years with a preliminary limitation of 1.5 years and will automatically be extended to 4 years, unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement : §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
- Performance of in-situ experiments related to time-resolved XRD and Raman spectroscopy on the solid-gas reactions of mono- and polycrystalline mineral samples.
- Evaluating the reaction kinetics include reversible hydration and ammoniation processes of sulfate salts and the CO2 reactivity of oxygen-based materials.
- Planning and performing of experiments at dedicated large-scale facilities (synchrotron) and associated data analyses.
- Preparation of scientific publication and presentations on national and international scientific events.
- We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 1 - 1.5 year/s and to become an active member of VISESS doctoral school.

- Completed degree (Master, Diplomingenieur, or equivalent) in Crystallography, Mineralogy, Chemistry, Physics or Materials Sciences.
- Knowledge and/or experience in experimental research including XRD and/or vibrational spectroscopy techniques is of advantage.
- Knowledge of MS Office / internet and internet application is a must.
- Sound computer/coding/programming skills are of advantage.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
- Team-working skills.

- Knowledge of programming languages (e.g. FORTRAN/C/C++ etc.) and in crystallographic software (SHELX/JANA/OLEX/FIT2D/GSAS etc.) is highly desirable.
Application documents must include:
- Letter of motivation including statements to the above mentioned key points of the profile.
