at the Vienna Doctoral School in Microbiology and Environmental Science

The Centre of Microbiology and Environmental Systems Science is comprised of 21 groups that conduct internationally leading research in the field of microbial ecology and environmental systems science. The Centre assembles an international, ambitious, and committed team and offers an interdisciplinary scientific environment,cutting-edge laboratories and a creative working atmosphere.
The Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science is looking for a
dedicated, enthusiastic PhD student in the field of Microbial metagenomics. The position will involve utilising metagenomics to explore the human associated microbial populations (microbiome), particularly the poorly characterised members and their relation to health, geography and lifestyle. It will also involve the evaluation, improvement, adaptation of computational approaches relevant for microbial metagenomics.
The announcement is made for four years, whereby the employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of four years, unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement : §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with relevant work experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.
Job Description:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration. This includes:
+ Involvement in a research project on high-resolution metagenomics to detail the human microbiome.
+ Publications and presentations
+ Involvement in project applications for third-party funding
+ Teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
+ Supervision of trainees and students
We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within the first year of employment.


Profile:
+ Diploma or master?s degree in biology/Microbiology/Bioinformatics or equivalent qualification
+ Excellent command of written and spoken English
+ High ability to express yourself both orally and in writing
+ Excellent team-working ability

Experience in microbial community profiling would be advantageous.
In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have very good communication and organizational skills.
