University Assistant (prae doc)

at the Department of Geography and Regional Research

The Department of Geography and Regional Research is part of the Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and

Astronomy. It is the largest and oldest Geography department in Austria. The Department offers scientific

degrees in two bachelor programs, four master programs, taught in German, as well as a master program,

taught in English, and a PhD program. For details on the Department, see

The position is assigned to the research group Physical Geography, which has a sound reputation in the

research domains of landslides, "human impact" on geosystems and spatial modeling of geomorphic processes

as well as in the applied research including global environmental change, natural hazards and risks,

vulnerability, multi-hazards and risks and early warning systems.

The employment relationship is initially limited to 1.5 years and is automatically extended to a total of 3 years,

unless the employer submits a declaration of non-renewal after a maximum of 12 months.

Duration of employment: 3 year/s

Extent of Employment: 30 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 Grundstufe (praedoc) with

relevant work

experience determining the assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

The employment aims to deepen and extend the professional and scientific education targeting a doctoral

degree. Your areas of work include:

- Writing a dissertation / We expect the successful candidate to sign a doctoral thesis agreement within 12-18

months.

- Contribution to scientific studies

- Involvement in international co-operations

- Support in application and acquisition of third-party funded projects

- Participation in teaching and independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement

- Supervision of students and examination activities

- Participation in evaluation activities and in quality assurance

- Integration into the research group and participation in administrative duties

Profile:

- Graduate degree in Geography or Applied Geology / Engineering Geology (major in Physical Geography,

Process Geomorphology or equivalent)

- Interest in process geomorphology and local and spatial monitoring, landslide analysis and modeling

- Field survey experience

- Greatest interest in landslide early warning systems inclusive installation and maintenance of field equipment,

data transfer, data storage and data analysis and visualization of results (refer to noeslide.at)

- GIS-qualifications are beneficial

- Skills in project management

- Very good pedagogic skills for teaching

- Experience in e-learning is beneficial

- Excellent command of written and spoken English and German

- High command of written and oral language

- Ability to work in teams

IT-Knowledge:

- MS Office (must criteria)

- Experience with slope stability programs (wish criteria)

- ArcGIS for desktop and server (wish criteria)

- Literature database (wish criteria)

- Adobe products (wish criteria)
