We are looking to strengthen our team at the newly established Department of Digital Scholarly Editing at the Faculty of Philological and Cultural Studies, which is part of the interdisciplinary field of Digital Philology and the extensive Digital Humanities activities at the University of Vienna. We work in research and teaching at the interface between computer science and cultural studies, in an attractive environment full of opportunities that extend beyond the faculty boundaries.

Your personal sphere of play:


The position is based at the Institute of European and Comparative Linguistics and Literature in the “Digital Scholarly Editing” department, which was established on April 1, 2024. The department aims to develop innovative projects and concepts for digital editions and the digital humanities that also offer connections beyond the narrower field of traditional editing - multimodal, interactive and interdisciplinary. The department sees itself as a building block in the diverse digital humanities landscape of the University and Vienna. The position is limited to six years and is planned to be filled from 01.07.2024.


Your future tasks:

You will actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:

  • Participation in research projects in the field of digital humanities and digital editorial studies
  • Independent research in these areas
  • International publication and presentation activities
  • Project application and acquisition of third-party funding
  • Independent teaching of courses in accordance with the provisions of the collective agreement
  • Student supervision
  • Participation in the establishment and further development of the department
  • Participation in administrative activities in research and teaching
     

This is part of your personality:


Your profile:

  • Doctorate/PhD in a cultural studies (preferably philological) discipline, digital humanities or a related subject with a philological/cultural studies component
  • Professional, methodological and didactic skills
  • User knowledge of programming languages or libraries in at least one of the following areas: data modelling of cultural studies objects, digital editions, computer-aided text analysis, data archiving and searching, data visualization or web programming
  • Competencies in the field of linguistics and literary studies
  • Ability to work in a team
  • High level of written and oral communication skills
  • Very good written and spoken English and German skills

We also expect: 

  • Experience in working on digital humanities projects
  • Willingness to engage in interdisciplinary exchange and research work in teams
  • Publications in renowned, relevant media (peer-reviewed according to professional standards)
  • International lecturing activities 

Desirable are:

  • University education in the field of information and data processing or digital humanities
  • Knowledge in the field of editorial science
  • Experience in project management or project coordination
  • Knowledge of university processes and structures
  • Experience abroad
