Research in our group is dedicated to the study of viruses and other genetic elements infecting members of the third domain of life, the Archaea. Additionally, we are studying extracellular vesicles and their influence on cell-to-cell communication and virus-host interactions. We are using state-of-the-art cultivation techniques, biochemical characterization of proteins, genomic approaches (metagenomics, single genome sequencing and genome comparison, gene knockout), electron microscopy as well as transcriptomics and quantitative PCR. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Scholar with proven experience with at least two of the techniques indicated above and the ability to incorporate or develop new molecular techniques. Previous experience in working with Archaea, with microbial viruses or extracellular vesicles is of great advantage. The successful candidate will be working in running projects, but will also get the opportunity to design and pursue independent research projects. Earliest starting date is March 2024, but later appointments are possible (preferably the latest May 2024). The position is offered for 4 years, with possibilities for extensions.The Postdoctoral Scholar will be required to participate in the institute’s teaching and lab activities at the level of 4 teaching hours per week.Main tasks:• Independent research work in the field of microbial virology with a focus on archaea and their viruses• Independent planning and execution of research projects (including grant applications) and participation in research projects of the working group• Independent planning and implementation of teaching courses including examinations• Co-supervision of students at the institute• Participation in organizational and administrative tasksRequirements:• PhD in biology, microbiology, virology or a related field• Proven publication experience• Experience with the cultivation of microorganisms and experience with molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/protein characterization)
• Knowledge of virus-host interactions, especially in microorganisms (preferably archaea); basic bioinformatics knowledge (e.g. genome analyses); experience in supervising bachelor and/or master students; excellent communication skills in English (writing and speaking) and an independent, cooperative and team-oriented working style are desired.
• Research experience, ideally with a stay abroad and experience working with archaea or extremophiles are of advantage
