Offer Description

The world is changing at an ever-faster pace. At the Johannes Kepler University Linz, we work on technologies and the ideas of tomorrow on a daily basis. At the same time, we educate over 24,000 young people to meet the demands of today’s job market. In short, we are Upper Austria’s largest institution for education and research. Are you interested in being a part of shaping the future at Austria’s most attractive campus university? We currently have an immediate job opening for a:

University Assistant (must hold a Doctorate/Ph.D. degree) for a full-time, six-year position at the Metaverse Lab

Job Reference Number: 55020-2023-000584

The digital space and its interfaces to the analogue world can be understood as the 'Metaverse,' a space beyond ('meta') the (physical) universe. Social media, AI-driven chatbots, or cryptocurrencies are current manifestations of the Metaverse. There are no (state) borders here. Therefore, state sovereignty with its legislative power can only be effective to a limited extent. The tech giants, especially those from Silicon Valley, have de facto sovereignty. These implications pose significant challenges for the rule of law and its liberal democratic order. The goal of the Metaverse Lab is to explore the transformation in and through the Metaverse in a radical interdisciplinary approach.

Job Duties:

  • Conduct independent research in the research fields of the Metaverse Labs at the Linz Institute for Transformative Change (LIFT_C)
  • Establishment and management of a junior research group (with two pre-doc positions)
  • Participation in research projects of the Metaverse Labs
  • Draft, prepare, and teach university-level courses
  • Supervise Bachelor’s and Master’s theses
  • Take part in academic administration
  • Participation in the establishment of a new research area and the inter- and transdisciplinary Linz Institute of Transformative Change

Your Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate must hold a Doctorate/Ph.D. degree (with honors or outstanding academic success) with a research focus on the digital space, primarily in legal sciences or in other areas (e.g., political sciences, philosophy, social sciences, economics, artificial intelligence)
  • Independent research program on the topics of digital transformation, digital sovereignty, artificial intelligence, or new organizational forms such as digital platforms
  • Experience with inter- or transdisciplinary approaches in research, teaching, and/or transfer activities, or "Third Mission."
  • First experiences in acquiring third-party funding projects
  • Didactic skills and experiences in teaching courses at Bachelor and Master level, as well as handling heterogeneous student groups
  • Methodological knowledge for researching digital phenomena
  • International experience and international research network
  • Publications in leading (inter-)national peer-reviewed journals
  • Strong command of German and English (German level C2, English level C1)

What We Offer:

  • On the basis of full-time employment (40 hours/week) the minimum salary in accordance with the collective agreement is € 4,752.30 gross per month (14 x per year, CA Job Grade: B1)
  • Stable employer
  • Attractive campus environment with good public transportation connections
  • Attractive continual educational opportunities
  • State-of-the-art research infrastructure
  • Dynamic research environment
  • Broad range of on-campus dining services/healthy meals (organic food at the cafeteria)
  • Exercise and sports classes (USI)
  • …and much more

Application Deadline: 05/15/2024.
