Senior Scientist in Climate Dynamics and Modeling
53 Faculty of Earth Sciences, Geography and Astronomy
Startdate: 01.06.2024 | Working hours: 40 | Collective bargaining agreement: §48 VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc)
Limited until: 31.05.2027
Reference no.: 2059

The research team “Climate Dynamics and Modeling” led by Prof. Aiko Voigt is part of the Department of Meteorology and Geophysics. We integrate innovative research, excellent teaching, and accessible outreach. One of our priorities is to find answers to fundamental questions in climate science, another one is to explore how our research can benefit practical applications. While we study a variety of topics ranging from climate change to Earth-like extrasolar planets, all of our activities are related to clouds, radiation and the circulation of the atmosphere. Climate models form the backbone of our work. This includes in particular models that simulate the global climate system at kilometer-scale resolution.

Requirements
Specific Requirements

Your personal sphere of action:

We are looking for a senior scientist to join our team. Together with Aiko Voigt, you will coordinate and lead the team’s modeling and data analysis activities. You will also have substantial freedom to articulate a research program that reflects your interests and expertise and complements the activities of the team. For example, your research program could harness exascale computing and kilometer-scale climate modeling, and build upon the growing interactions between climate, weather and data science.

The envisioned start date is 1 June 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter, with flexibility to accommodate the needs of the successful candidate. The position is initially limited to 3 years. A transition to a permanent position is possible through mutual agreement.

What you will be doing:
  • You coordinate the modeling and data analysis activities of the team together with Aiko Voigt and assist other team members.
  • You teach independently (up to 4 hours per week), including supervision of students.
  • You perform independent research and disseminate its results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at conferences.
  • You apply for third-party funding and HPC resources (e.g., at VSC and EuroHPC JU).
  • You contribute to the vibrant social and intellectual culture of the department.
  • You contribute to organizational and administrative tasks.

What we expect from you:

  • A Ph.D. in climate science, atmospheric sciences, meteorology or a related field
  • Profound experience with climate models or numerical weather prediction models on high-performance computers; experience with the ICON model is a plus
  • Strong skills in programming, data analysis and software management
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Creativity and curiosity, as well as the ability to work toward deadlines
  • Willingness to work interdisciplinary and collaborate with other actors at the University of Vienna, for example within the newly established Environment and Climate Hub
