The position of Rector, Paris Lodron University of Salzburg is to be filled in accordance with § 23 (2) University Act (Universitätsgesetz) 2002 at the earliest date possible.

The University of Salzburg was founded in 1622. Today it has six faculties with around 18,000 students and 2,800 employees and is currently in a phase of transition and ongoing reform. It is the largest educational and research institution in Salzburg and as such has responsibility towards society. The University of Salzburg has achieved outstanding results in both foundational and applied research. The University aims to provide scientists and students with excellent research and teaching possibilities as well as international visibility and networking. We are looking for a leader well versed in university policy and with international experience, ideally with outstanding academic credentials, who is able to lead the University of Salzburg with creative drive, innovative strength and the ability to implement and align with future demands.

Skills/Qualifications

We expect:

- the ability to manage the university organizationally and economically, including international experience and knowledge of the Austrian and European university system (§ 23 (2) University Act)

- communication, integration and cooperation skills; in particular the willingness and ability to work constructively and in a spirit of trust with all university bodies, all staff and students with the goal of creating an inclusive and diversity-sensitive university culture

- the ability to actively shape the University's profile and future orientation, both in terms of excellence and interdisciplinarity in research, teaching and transfer and in terms of the University's success in national and international competition

- competencies in university research and teaching as well as a broad understanding of science that corresponds to the character of the University of Salzburg as a comprehensive university

- the ability to represent the University in politics, business and society and to promote the sustainable development of the University and its social responsibility, in particular to promote trust in science

Selection process

The Rector is elected by the University Council based on a binding proposal by the Senate for a term of four years; re-election is permissible. The application should demonstrate that the applicant fulfills the stated qualification requirements. In addition to the standard application documents, a comprehensive description of the ideas regarding the management and principles of the office as well as the future regional and international development of the University (5-10 pages) is expected.

The selection procedure follows the process set out in the University Act. Applicants should be prepared to present themselves and their ideas in a public hearing. The University Council reserves the right to involve external consultants in the process.
