Postdoc (f/m/x) - Modern Greek Studies
75% employement (part-time) for max. 2 years.
The Institute for Habsburg and Balkan Studies (ÖAW) invites applications for a postdoctoral position in the FWF-funded project “Alternative Hellenisms: Religion, Language and Identity in Frangochiotika Documents”. The project investigates Greek-language texts written in Latin script, produced chiefly by Catholic communities in the early modern and modern Eastern Mediterranean (16th–20th centuries) and builds the first comprehensive digital corpus and edition of this textual tradition.
Your Tasks
- Contribute to building the project's digital corpus and edition: quality control of digitization and development of TEI P5-compliant transcription guidelines, co-supervising two student assistants
- Conduct in-depth historical and philological analysis of the Frangochiotika sources jointly with the PI
- Lead the project's micro-level analysis of vernacular piety, material culture, and community life, including applying computational text-analysis methods to the corpus
- Co-organize project workshops and conferences
- Produce a major study on the phonology and morphology of the Modern Greek vernacular based on the Frangochiotika corpus, and two co-authored peer-reviewed articles
Your Profile
Essential:
- PhD in Modern Greek Studies (History, Philology, Linguistics, Literary Studies, or a closely related field);
- demonstrated research expertise in Modern Greek literature and textual production of the early modern period and the centuries preceding the twentieth century;
- excellent to native-level command of Modern Greek (C1–C2), including the ability to work with historical varieties of the language;
- strong philological skills, including critical work with historical manuscripts and printed sources;
- fluent English
Desirable:
- Research engagement with vernacular Greek, language variation and change, and the historical development of Modern Greek;
- a publication record on multi-scriptural traditions in Greek;
- experience with transcription, transliteration, and textual editing;
- familiarity with Ottoman and/or Eastern Mediterranean contexts and relevant languages (Italian, French, Ottoman Turkish);
- familiarity with digital humanities methods (TEI/XML, digital editing, corpus development, metadata)
The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate academic independence, a publication record appropriate to their career stage, and the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary environment spanning history, literary studies, linguistics, and digital humanities.

The minimum annual gross salary for this position is EUR 70.167,44 (full-time based), in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). For part-time employment, the salary will be adjusted on a pro rata basis in line with the agreed working hours.
