Organisational Unit

At the Institute for Design in Existing Contexts and Historic Preservation, we deal with the built environment in our research and teaching and are concerned about existing buildings. Looking both forwards and backwards, we view the existing building stock as a reference space for future action and as a space of possibility for practical design. Our attention is not only focused on the masterpieces of architectural history in their respective architectural, historical and social context, but above all on the rather inconspicuous architecture of everyday life. Beyond the preservation of the material heritage, we understand monument preservation as a proactive approach to the existing buildings of today - the monuments of tomorrow.
