Master Thesis „Sensor Fusion and Consistency Preservation with absolute Pose-Sources”


  • Autonomous robots are equipped with sensors to obtain their position
  • To increase robustness, different modalities are used (e.g. GPS, LiDAR, Camera)
  • Sensors (e.g. GPS) and some localization algorithms (e.g. visual localization) work in their own (absolute) independent reference system
  • Keeping these coordinate systems consistent and up-to-date is a major prerequisite for sensor fusion


  • One possible scenario is the usage of a low-cost GPS with (multiple) additional visual localization solutions to enhance overall positioning accuracy
  • Mixed indoor / outdoor operation (temporary loss of GPS)
  • Seamless transitions between different sensor setups and operational availabilities


  • One task of this project is to evaluate state-of-the art sensor fusion concepts with special focus on absolute pose-sources
  • Design and implementation of sensor fusion concepts
  • Evaluation of resulting positioning accuracies and increase in system robustness for defined scenarios

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner*:

  • Enrolled as a master student in computer science, software engineering, information and computer engineering, mathematics or similar
  • Background knowledge and interest in autonomous systems and sensor fusion
  • Strong self-motivation and curiosity for solving challenging robotic problems
  • Good knowledge and object-oriented programming experience in C++ / Python and ROS

What to expect:

At least € 719,51 gross for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement (Forschungs‐KV). The actual salary will be determined individually, based on your qualifications and experience.
