Offer Description

As Austria's largest research and technology organisation for applied research, we are dedicated to make substantial contributions to solving the major challenges of our time, climate change and digitisation. To achieve our goals, we rely on our specific research, development and technology competencies, which are the basis of our commitment to excellence in all areas. With our open culture of innovation and our motivated, international teams, we are working to position AIT as Austria's leading research institution at the highest international level and to make a positive contribution to the economy and society.

Our Center for Vision, Automation & Control located in Vienna invites applications for a Master's Thesis. At the Center for Vision, Automation & Control  our research unit "Complex Dynamical Systems ” focuses its research on modelling, simulation, analysis and optimisation, as well as on the control of complex and dynamical industrial systems and processes. The primary goal is to enhance product quality, increase flexibility, and boost resource efficiency. Applications are found in the fields of mechatronics, robotics, and industrial production facilities.

The Master Thesis is part of the project Optimal time-temperature-curves for aluminium alloys during heat treatment, where new methods and technologies are developed to enable a direct control of mechanical properties. In the heat treatment of aluminium alloys, the evolution of the multiple phases is mainly responsible for the mechanical properties. In this Master Thesis, we are conducting research on material modelling with the aim of increasing product quality and resource efficiency.

MASTER THESIS "DEVELOPMENT OF A FAST AGE-HARDENING MODEL FOR ALUMINIUM ALLOYS TO PREDICT RELEVANT MATERIAL FEATURES"

CENTER FOR VISION, AUTOMATION & CONTROL

  • The main goal of this master’s thesis is to develop a fast age-hardening model for an aluminium alloy 6082, which enables the prediction of relevant material features (phase fractions, concentrations, yield strength, tensile strength, …).
  • Under the guidance of your interdisciplinary team, you will carry out a literature search and will extend our existing material model to capture the phase fractions, the concentration and the mechanical features.
  • You will implement the mathematical model in MATLAB.
  • You will parametrise unknown model parameters and validate your results by real data from DSC measurements and tensile tests.
  • You will accumulate experience in a research field, that deals with digital and green transformation.
  • You will gain experience in a group of international engineers and scientists and you have the opportunity to build up your professional network.

Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:

  • Ongoing master's studies in the field of Material Science, Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Automatic Control or Mathematics
  • Good programming skills in MATLAB
  • Excellent technical understanding & analytical capabilities
  • Enjoyment of application-oriented questions of industry
  • High level of commitment and team spirit
  • Good knowledge of German and/or English in word and writing

What to expect:

  • Duration of the master’s thesis project: 6 months
  • Start date: as soon as possible
  • EUR 968,-- gross per month for 20 hours/week based on the collective agreement. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of master theses, and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly!

At AIT diversity and inclusion are of great importance. This is why we strive to inspire women to join our teams in the field of technology. We welcome applications from women, who will be given preference in case of equal qualifications after taking into account all relevant facts and circumstances of all applications.
