The Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA) is one of Europe’s leading institutes for basic research in the life sciences. IMBA is located on the dynamic and interdisciplinary campus of the Vienna BioCenter, which is home to 2000 scientists from over 80 nationalities with English as the working language. IMBA scientists conduct curiosity-driven research across a broad spectrum of biological topics. 

IMBA invites applications for two group leader positions as part of an open search in the life sciences. Applications from researchers in areas related to germline biology, mobile genetic elements including virus biology, chromosome biology, as well as tissue-scale biology and synthetic biology are welcome, but we encourage applications from any area in the life sciences. Candidates are expected to develop and lead an independent, innovative research program that addresses fundamental questions in their proposed areas.  

IMBA offers a broad range of core facilities including an animal house, bio-optics, mass spectrometry, genome editing, flow cytometry, electron microscopy, and next generation sequencing. IMBA group leaders are fully independent positions similar to assistant professorships. IMBA participates in the international Vienna BioCenter PhD program and the Max Birnstiel summer school, which are amongst the most competitive graduate and undergraduate research programs in Europe.
