Offer Description

The advertised position in the Department of Geoinformation at the Institute of Geodesy lies at the interface between geodesy, computer science, geography and the humanities. Location, spatial reference, big data, data science, and, in recent years, artificial intelligence and machine learning all play a significant role. As 80% of global data is related to a location and is used in a wide range of applications and research areas, the interdisciplinary topic of “Geospatial Data Analysis” is intended to be further strengthened and expanded in the field of geoinformatics in the future.

We are looking for a person with proven experience and expertise in the field of geoinformation and geospatial data analysis. Comprehensive skills in big data, data science and geo-artificial intelligence are particularly desirable.

In addition to the integration in the Department of Geodesy, both the connection to TU Graz Informatics and the NAWI cooperation (e.g. Institute of Geography and Spatial Research, Karl-Franzens-University Graz) should be further promoted. National and international collaborations beyond the Institute of Geodesy should be intensified in the future. Geoinformatics is expected to make a substantial contribution to the key issues of today (e.g. climate change, climate neutrality, mobility transition, circular economy, etc.) through Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI) and (Geo)Spatial Agent Based Modeling, among other things.

A willingness to lead the Geoinformation working group at the Institute of Geodesy is required, as well as active participation in research projects of the Institute of Geodesy / Geoinformation working group, and acquisition and management of research projects. Furthermore, a distinctive scientific activity (publications and active participation in congresses and conferences) is expected. In the area of teaching (in German and English), new developments and technologies (GeoAI, Geospatial Data Analysis) are to be incorporated into the subject-related subjects of Bachelor's, Master's and PhD programs and service teaching is to be further expanded, thus helping to meet the great demand for graduates.

Employment Requirements:

  • Completed doctoral studies or equivalent studies in the field of geoinformation, geodesy or related fields.
  • Proven scientific and subject-specific achievements, which can be demonstrated through international, peer-reviewed publications, as well as active publication activity and presentations at international and national conferences and meetings. Networking within the geoinformation community would be beneficial.
  • Didactic skills for adequate implementation of teaching at Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral level.
  • Management qualification and leadership skills including gender and diversity aspects.
  • Very good written and spoken German and English. If you do not yet have any knowledge of German, you are expected to be willing to acquire it.

 Selection Criteria:

  • Outstanding scientific qualifications in research and teaching
  • Visible involvement in the international research community
  • Appropriate didactic and pedagogical skills for a tenure track position
  • Experience in teaching at Bachelor’s, and Master’s level
  • Experience in the acquisition and management of third-party funded projects
  • Sufficient leadership experience and the ability to lead a research team or unit
  • The ability to work in a team and willingness for cooperation within and outside the university
  • Competences in Gender, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Excellent language skills in German and English. If you do not yet have any knowledge of German, you are expected to be willing to acquire it.

Necessary Application Documents:

  • Curriculum vitae (with copies of diplomas).
  • A list of publications, highlighting the 5 most important publications.
  • A research and teaching statement describing past and planned research activities (max. 4 pages in total).
  • Names and contact information of two references.
