Data Scientist in Chemical Proteomics (m/f/d)

The laboratory of Georg Winter is recruiting a Project Scientist to work on the elucidation of fundamental principles that govern interactions between small molecules and the proteome via large-scale chemical proteomics.

The Project

Based on large-scale chemical proteomics, we have determined the proteome-wide binding patterns of several hundred small-molecules in a quantitative yet unbiased manner. Through the systems-level analysis of this dataset, we now aim to match chemical- and proteomic diversity to deduce general principles that govern the interactions between proteins and small molecules, including drugs and metabolites. The generated knowledge will illuminate our fundamental understanding of chemical communication, but also guide the development of novel therapeutics strategies, including targeted protein degradation. The successful applicant will work on this project as part of a multi-disciplinary research team consisting of biochemists, molecular biologists, and synthetic chemists. This exciting collaboration is at the vibrant interface between academia and industry, allowing the candidate to also achieve a measurable translational impact.

Your Tasks

  • Processing and analysing quantitative proteomics datasets in a standardized and reproducible manner
  • Multi-layered data visualization
  • Integrating data with available datasets such as gene dependency or structural predictions
  • Navigating an existing infrastructure for data management and data storage
  • Independently communicating and presenting results internally, as well as to our external pharma partner
  • Further tasks to be discussed based on candidate's individual interests and levels of experience

The Candidate

The successful candidate holds an MSc. or PhD degree in (bio-) informatics or in life sciences. We are looking for a solution-oriented, persistent researcher with an independent, well-structured and goal-oriented working style. You should have a scientific track record (including at least one first author publication) in the fields of computational biology, mass spectrometry, or proteomics. We expect the successful candidate to be proficient in statistics and standard proteomics software tools such as Proteome Discoverer or MaxQuant. Moreover, the successful candidate should be fluent in Python, R or a similar programming language. Expertise in structural biology and the interpretation of structural models (e.g. Alphafold) are considered a plus. The working language at CeMM is English, and excellent written and oral communication skills as well as high accuracy, reliability and excellent interpersonal and organizational skills are a requirement.

The Institute (http://www.cemm.at)

CeMM is one of Europe’s leading biomedical research institutes. CeMM researchers routinely publish important discoveries in top journals. Over the last seven years, this included >10 papers in Nature/Cell/Science/NEJM and >30 papers in Nature/Cell sister journals – with a team of 120-150 scientists. Research at CeMM is exceptionally collaborative and has strong focus on medical impact, based on a profound molecular understanding of diseases such as cancer and immune disorders. CeMM is part of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and a founding member of EU-LIFE. It is located at the center of one of the largest medical campuses in Europe, within walking distance of Vienna’s historical city center. A study by “The Scientist” put CeMM among the top-5 best places to work in academia worldwide (https://www.the-scientist.com/features/best-places-to-work-academia-2012-40676). Vienna is frequently ranked the world’s best city to live. It is a United Nations city with a large English-speaking community. The official language at CeMM is English, and >49 different nationalities are represented at the institute. CeMM promotes equal opportunity and harbors a mix of different talents, backgrounds, competences, and interests.

We offer
