The Faculty of Technical Chemistry invites applications for an Assistant Professorship (m_f) - Tenure Track „Functional Polymer Materials for Medical Applications."

The Faculty of Technical Chemistry at the Technische Universität Wien (TU Wien) invites applications for an Assistant Professor position (tenure track, full-time employment) expected to begin at 01.10.2021. The position is initially limited to a period of six years and, in the event of a qualification agreement being concluded and fulfilled, includes the option of taking on an unlimited employment relationship as an Associate Professor.

The tenure-track position is affiliated to the Institute of Applied Synthetic Chemistry, research unit Macromolecular Chemistry. Duties include research and teaching in the field of new polymeric materials for the application in medical engineering and biomedicine. The focus of research is in the development of biocompatible polymers with new functions like bioresorbability and materials that can be processed by modern technologies (e.g. 3D printing) to enable arbitrary complex geometries. The establishment of this tenure track position should strengthen existing research activities and moreover create tighter crosslinks between the areas synthetic chemistry, material sciences, polymer processing and analytics, life sciences as well as medical engineering.

Tasks:

Research:

  • Preparation of building blocks in polymer chemistry (including synthesis of monomers and Initiators) and synthesis of defined blocks by application of advanced synthetic methodologies (e.g. living polymerizations)
  • Synthesis of polymers and polymer-based materials (bulk materials, composites, hydrogels and ceramics), in particular by photopolymerization, click chemistry (e.g., thiol-ene), polyaddition, ring opening polymerization
  • Comprehensive characterization of produced materials (incl. photoDSC, photorheometry, thermomechanics, microanalysis by, e.g. AFM) and further development of existing methodologies
  • Processing of the materials by advanced methods, including 3D printing, electrospinning and further development of the processing portfolio.
  • Material application and clinical translation, mainly in the field wound healing, bone and blood vessel replacement materials, tissue adhesives (in vivo curing) and drug release

Teaching:

  • In master curricula, the topics “advanced polymer synthesis” and “biomaterials” should be covered in the framework of lectures, seminars and lab courses. In Bachelor curricula teaching in the fields of “macromolecular chemistry” and “chemistry and technology of organic materials” should be provided. Since currently the language in teaching in Bachelor curricula is German, appropriate language skills are essential

Your profile:
  • A completed domestic or equivalent foreign university education with a doctorate (in the according fields) as well as excellent German and English language skills
  • Proven expertise in the field of synthesis and characterization of low and high molecular organic compounds
  • Profound experience and proven research achievements in different fields of photopolymerization, 3D printing as well as polymer analysis (e.g., GPC, photorheometry, photoDSC) with corresponding publication activity in international, peer-reviewed journals
  • Expertise in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, especially in the application of polymer-based biomaterials (synthetic, bio-derived or renewable) in medical engineering.
  • Outstanding achievements and potential in research, excellent publication record (at least 5 original work publication as first or corresponding author), international reputation proven by contributions at international conferences, experience in application driven research (patent applications). Experience in designing, acquisition and implementation of research projects
  • Evidence of funds raised at a highly competitive level according to the excellence initiative of TUW (e.g. ERC, FWF-START, FWF-Young-Independent-Researcher-Groups, CD-laboratories) in above mentioned fields of research including successful project management
  • Relevant experience in academic teaching (classes and lab courses) and supervising or co-supervising of academic theses
  • Scientific activity outside Austria (for at least 1 year)
  • Ability and willingness to lead a research group as well as to adopt management tasks within the organizational structure; organizational talent and ability to work in a team as well as excellent communication skills
  • Ability and willingness for inter-faculty and inter-university collaboration
  • Ideally competences and experience, respectively, in promoting young researchers and women as well as in gender mainstreaming

We offer:
  • Continuing personal and professional education and flexible working hours
  • Central location of workplace with very good accessibility (U1/U2/U4 Karlsplatz)
  • A creative environment in one of the most liveable cities in the world
  • Additional benefits for employees can be found at the following link: Fringe-Benefit Catalogue of TU Wien

After signing the qualification agreement, the employment continues as Assistant Professor with a minimum salary of EUR 4,666.30 gross (14 x per year).

The application should include the following files:

  • CV and Motivation Letter
  • Research statement (description of previous and planned research) as well as a Proof of academic degrees, e.i. of doctoral and diploma certificate
  • Teaching statement (description of previous and planned teaching)
  • Concept for the future plans in research and teaching and contributions to scientific profile of the faculty respectively of the university as well as Acquired third-party fund projects
