Job profile:
The Department of English is looking for

a Postdoctoral Associate (40 hours/week). The position is initially limited to a period of six years. The department can offer a qualification agreement. Upon successfully fulfilling the terms of this agreement, the employee will be offered a permanent position as associate professor.

Main duties: 

  • independent research in the field of British/Anglophone literary studies; 
  • implementation of a postdoc research project on the level of a Habilitationsprojekt; 
  • internationally visible publication and conference activities;
  • application for third-party funding;
  • independent teaching of courses on different periods (including periods before 1900) in all programmes (BA, MA, teacher training programmes);
  • (co)-supervision of student theses; 
  • student supervision; 
  • participation in research projects at the department and in the University’s research centres;
  • administrative support

Necessary qualifications: 

  • completed doctorate (PhD) in British/Anglophone literary studies (with above-average result); 
  • academic publications (in addition to the PhD thesis) and conference papers; 
  • research interests/areas in the field of British/Anglophone (not US-American) literatures; 
  • excellent didactic abilities; 
  • relevant mobility experiences (during or after PhD phase); 
  • excellent knowledge of English (level C2); 
  • good knowledge of German (at least B1; willingness to acquire level C1 in German within two years); 
  • experience with the acquisition and/or management of third-party funding; 
  • excellent communication skills and the ability to work well in a team; 
  • high capacity for independent work and demonstrable organisational skills
  • Desirable: relevant international networks and international academic experience
