Academy Scientist (f/m/x)

in the area of Lexical Variation

(part-time, 30h per week)

 

The position is situated in the OeAW long term project “Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria” (‘Wörterbuch der bairischen Mundarten in Österreich’, WBÖ), which is dedicated to the comprehensive documentation and lexicographic analysis of the various base and regional dialects of (historical) Austria and South Tyrol. Your work will be in the context of language variation and language change research in Austria, with the editing and analysis of the WBÖ material and the comparison of this historical material with contemporary language data being a major focus of your tasks. The WBÖ follows a modern text technological approach in which digital methods and formats (databases, XML/TEI) are of central importance. Basic technical skills and open-mindedness towards the latest developments in the field of digital humanities (especially corpus linguistic methods) are therefore as much part of the requirements profile as sound knowledge in the fields of language variation, sociolinguistics, dialectology and corpus linguistics (with a system linguistic focus on lexis).

 

Your tasks

·          Corpus linguistic editing and analysis of data from the “Dictionary of Bavarian Dialects in Austria” (WBÖ)

·          Research on language variation and change in Austrian lexis (from the WBÖ to the present)

·          Collaboration in preparing and submitting project proposals in the context of research on language variation and change in Austrian lexis

·          Collaboration in the research department “Linguistics” (consisting of postdocs, doctoral students, student assistants and professors)

·          Participation in project meetings (in different constellations and sizes), conventions, conferences and symposia

 

Your profile

·         Completed doctorate in German philology / German studies with a main focus on linguistics

·         Research focus (verifiable through project experience, publications etc.) in German linguistics, preferably in the context of variationist linguistics, sociolinguistics, dialectology, corpus linguistics, research on lexis

·         Open-mindedness towards the newest developments in the field of digital humanities

·         Very good knowledge of German, very good knowledge of English

·         Teamwork, integration capacity, independence, reliability, ability to work under pressure, flexibility

 

The annual gross salary is € 49.876,05 in accordance with the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. The employment will start at the earliest in June 2024 and run initially for 5 years, with the option to extend.
