The world is changing at an ever-faster pace. At the Johannes Kepler University Linz, we work on technologies and the ideas of tomorrow on a daily basis. At the same time, we educate over 23,000 young people to meet the demands of today’s job market. In short, we are Upper Austria’s largest institution for education and research. Are you interested in being a part of shaping the future at Austria’s most attractive campus university? We currently have an immediate job opening for:

2x University Assistants (must hold a Doctorate/Ph.D. degree) for a full-time,one-year position (can be extended) at the Institute of Tumor Biology

Job Reference Number: 5136

We are interested in cellular stress response programs, in particular cellular senescence and study their impact on tumor development and the efficacy of anticancer therapies. We utilize in vitro and in vivo model systems to dissect molecular mechanisms and to functionally explore novel therapeutic strategies by state-of-the-art multi-omics, single-cell and imaging techniques. Specific experimental approaches focus on signaling pathways, metabolism, stemness, plasticity and immunogenicity. Our central aim is to understand the mechanical role of altered cellular states in cancer biology and clinical presentation and to convert molecular vulnerabilities identified in these test platforms into conceptually novel anticancer therapies. For detailed information, please see recent publications by the group, such as Lee-S et al., Nature 2022, Yu-Y et al., and a review article by Lee-S and Schmitt-CA, Nat Cell Biol 2019.

The post-doc position would be embedded in a project pursuing the implication of virus-induced senescence in cancer development and therapy response. The position is immediately available as part of Prof. Soyoung Lee’s group, recently relocated from Berlin (Charité – University Medical Center), Germany, to the Faculty of Medicine at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz, Austria. The group is an active part of a young, innovative research environment, located directly next to the university hospital, thereby easily accessible to clinical projects.

Job Duties:

  • Planning and conducting experiments in the field of cancer research, particularly in the following areas: cellular stress response and cancer therapy, oncogenic signaling pathway, senescence, mouse models of cancer, virology. For detailed information, please see recent publications by the group: Lee-S et al., Nature 2022 (doi: 10.1038/s41586-021-03995-1) and Yu-Y et al., Cancer Cell 2018 (doi: 10.1016/j.ccell.2018.03.009)

  • Experience with mouse models and bioinformatics would be highly valued
  • As the lab communication is in English, proficiency in English is required (level C1 or higher). German is not required but is advantageous (level B1)
  • Experience with scientific/scholarly writing and presentations
  • A high degree of motivation and creativity
