Offer Description

You want to understand how things are connected and make a fundamental impact? We offer an environment where you can realize your full potential. At one of Europe’s largest and most modern business and economics universities. On a campus where quality of work is also quality of life. We are looking for support at the

Institute for Sociology and Social Research
Part-time, 30 hours/week
Starting July 01, 2024, and ending after 6 years

You want to deepen your research interest in questions at the interface of economy and society, politics, and the environment while gaining your first teaching experience? This position opens doors to either an academic career or to later switch to work as an expert in responsible positions in the public or private sector.

Qualified candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply for this position. If necessary, a reduction of the extent of employment is possible.

What to expect
  • Work on your own PhD project: You will carry out PhD research in an area of interest and under the supervision of a professor in economic sociology, covering interactions of economy and society, law, politics, and the environment (Frerichs).
  • Working on your dissertation: You will be able to investigate your research topic, work on papers or chapters for your dissertation, and take part in related scientific activities, including courses and workshops, for a third of your regular working hours.
  • Complete English-taught PhD courses: You will have the opportunity to become enrolled and complete course work in the English-taught PhD programme at the Department of Socioeconomics, which is open to all faculty members.
  • Prepare and conduct teaching: You will teach courses or course units in German and/or English, with an emphasis on theoretical perspectives, empirical research methods, and academic writing, related to matters of the economy, society, politics and the environment, and be able to take part in university-pedagogical courses.
  • Communicate with students: You support students from different disciplines, provide feedback on course essays, become a co-supervisor for bachelor’s theses, and help promote the Department’s new study branch “Economy, Environment, Politics” (WUPol).
  • Supporting work at the Institute: You will be able to take part in research projects at the Institute, support publication activities and contribute to administrative tasks (e.g., recruitment of bachelor theses, updating the website, organising academic events).

What you have to offer

For teaching and research associate (Universitätsassistent*in prae doc) positions:

  • Academic degree: You have a Master’s degree in the social and economic sciences that qualifies you for enrollment in a doctoral programme at WU, and you graduated with excellent grades (include study transcript).
  • Major in sociology: Ideally, you completed a Master's programme with a major in sociology (or equivalent) and a focus on sociological theory and empirical research methods, and are well versed in these fields (highlight courses and competences).
  • Quality of academic writing: Your Master’s thesis and other written assignments completed in your studies are of excellent quality, especially inasmuch as the focus area of this position is concerned (include writing samples/excerpts and evaluation).
  • PhD research proposal: You have a substantive interest in promoting sociological perspectives on interactions of economy and society, law, politics, and the environment, and concrete ideas for a viable PhD project in this field (include outline of ca. 5 pages).
  • Academic work experience: Ideally, you already have some work experience in a university setting and have a realistic idea about the challenges of combining research, teaching, administration, and communication tasks in becoming a faculty member.
  • High proficiency in English: Given the international orientation of our work, we expect high proficiency in (written and spoken) academic English; German-language skills are a plus as they enhance your flexibility to teach and co-supervise in both languages.
  • Willingness to use multimedia teaching methods: You have experience in using multimedia teaching and learning formats or are at least willing to learn
  • Complete application: A complete and elaborate application addresses all the above aspects and includes related documentation. Please also include some notes on your motivation for taking on such an academic position in the cover letter.
