About the Role
The Technician (Anatomic Pathology) will provide essential technical support for postmortem (PM) examination activities at the Melbourne Veterinary School's Werribee campus. Reporting to senior staff (Veterinary Pathology), this position will assist in overseeing the workflow in the PM area and facilitating the smooth and effective provision of PM services.
The position requires regular handling of hazardous chemicals and of cadavers of a range of domestic and non-domestic animals and birds.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Oversee the provision of PM services, including answering and directing enquiries regarding submissions; acting as the first point of contact for queries for the PM area; receiving cases and liaising with clients regarding the receipt of cases; ensuring that all appropriate documentation has been collated and is entered into a database; ensuring that pertinent information is communicated to pathologists in a timely and efficient manner; ensuring appropriate case billing; and ensuring that specimens are transferred and stored appropriately.
- Providing assistance with PM examinations, including helping with the dissection of all animals.
- Assist with the management of deceased aftercare and pathology specimen disposal, including facilitating the collection, drop-off and disposal of cadavers, and incinerating waste materials, as required.
- Providing technical support and assistance prior to and during practical classes in the PM area, including the setting up of relevant materials and specimens, ensuring that he strict biosecurity protocols are followed, and demonstrating basic dissection techniques to students or staff, and cleaning up after classes/practicals/dissections.
- General and routine maintenance of the PM facilities, including daily cleaning, maintenance of equipment (including repairing or arranging the repair and servicing of items in an efficient manner), as well as waste management.
Who We Are Looking For
You will have well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and liaise with diverse stakeholders, including students. You will also demonstrate autonomy, flexibility, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
You will also have:
- A relevant degree or equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
- Previous experience in dissection of animals or abattoir work.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements of working in a laboratory, including those related to OH&S, EH&S and biosecurity.
- Sound administrative skills including computer literacy (particularly with Outlook, MS Word, Excel), record-keeping ability and attention to detail.

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University.
