About the team
The safety, health, and wellbeing of our staff, students and partners is fundamental to UWA’s pursuit of excellence in education and research. The Safety unit is responsible for all aspects of health and safety for staff, students and other users of the University’s campuses and properties in the context of the Western Australia Work Health and Safety Act 2020. This unit leads the University’s strategic intent to achieve and effectively maintain a safe and healthy working environment for all, and culture that considers safety and health risk as part of all operational planning and delivery activities.

About the opportunity
As the appointee you will, under broad direction from the Director, provide professional scientific and technical services for the University involving the legislative compliance and best practice use of: chemicals and hazardous substances; and radiation (radioactive materials, irradiating equipment / electronic products). You will contribute to the development and review of related procedures, guidance, and practices; providing services, practical advice, and assistance; assist in conducting training, inspections, and audits; and investigating and reporting on incidents. You will use your experience and judgement to analyse and advise on these and general health and safety matters. You will work closely to support the day-to-day functions of the Technical Advisor – Chemical Safety and Senior Physicist.

About you
To be considered for this opportunity, you will demonstrate:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in physical or natural sciences (physics, chemistry, occupational hygiene, pharmacology, etc) or demonstrated equivalent competency.
  • Substantial relevant experience at an appropriate level.
  • Experience, knowledge, and commitment to chemical, and/or laboratory safety practices with a willingness to expand your skillset into radiation safety management.
  • Knowledge, interpretation and application of relevant work health and safety State and Commonwealth legislation and best practices from a university or similar perspective.
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to use a range of media and strategies to communicate WHS information and knowledge effectively.
  • Highly developed time management skills and demonstrated ability to implement change in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team to address a range of WHS problems.
  • Post graduate qualification in safety and health or related area (desirable).
  • Experience in chemical handling and disposal procedures (desirable).
